Bypass the relay with a piece of wire, (preferably fused). This means: Remove the relay and put the piece of wire in place of terminal 30 and 87 in the cavity where the relay lives. Even if you don't use a fuse all you are doing is giving the fan the same voltage it would be getting if the relay was closed. If the fan doesn't come on then leave the jumper wire in place and smack the fan motor with something like a screwdriver handle or small hammer with the voltage applied and see if that makes the fan come on. (Stuck fan- replace fan). All electrical diagnoses should come from the relay. It gives you the input and output for the fan. The input is 12v hot on terminal 30. This usually this is constant hot wire from the main buss line on the fuse box. The 87 terminal goes to the fan itself so that the output of this terminal will be a grounded motor waiting for voltage. The 86 wire on this relay is normally fed through the fuse box via the fuel pump fuse and gets voltage when the ignition is turned on. The 85 terminal on the relay is the field ground and energizes the relay. This wire comes from the switch which in this case is the computer or ECM. When the engine gets hot the coolant temperature swich sends a signal to the ECM to ground the relay terminal 85 which colses the points of the relay and allow power to travel from the 30 terminal to the 87 terminal. this gives power from the 30 terminal to the fan at the other end of the 87 terminal. the grounded fan receives this power, begins to spin and cool the engine. By the way relays have a failure rate of about .015% so the problem probably isn't the relay itself. Joe

1996 Honda Odyessey engine cooling fans don't come on and engine on and engine temperature tends to go up. it will only come on when the AC is switched on. i do not need to run the AC all the time but i...

Check all fuses first. if the fuses are okay, disconnect the engine cooling fan connector and using jumper wires, connect the fan motor directly to the battery and ground. If the fan still doesn't work, replace it. If the fan does work, its relay may be faulty. Check in the engine compartment fuse box for the cooling fan relays. Try switching the cooling fan relays and see if the engine fan comes on and the a/c condensor fan stops working. If so, the engine cooling fan relay is faulty. If the engine fan still doesn't come on with a good relay, then check the engine temperature switch located at the passenger end of the front cylinder head. It is supposed to switch (have continuity) when the engine temperature reaches 205 deg F. You can remove the switch and put it in a pot of close to boiling water (212 deg F). If it doesn't have continuity at that temperature, it is defective.

Check the engine main relay, the radiator fan relay no. 1, 30A CDS and FAN fuses, and the ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor for proper function. For the ECT, there should be continuity when the engine is cold (200F).

3.8litre ,electric fan continues to run killing battery.doesn't happen all the time.

It is most likely the fan relay is sticking and allowing the fan to run on, the relay is plugged into the fuse/relay box on the drivers side of the engine compartment.

I appreciate the help regarding the Dodge ?2002? radiator fan relay switch, but I can?t find a replace part anywhere on the web. What I see is a replacement ?relay radiator fan? and nothing about a switch....

The device that turns the radiator fan on is a temperature sensor on the lower radiator hose towards the engine block. That could be the switch that you are referring to. When the coolant reaches a certain temperature it tells the radiator to turn on. The relay then sends the power to the fan.

Cooling fans will not come on

Hi,

Fan Relay switch is stuck open. This of course assumes your temperature sensor is working appropriately. Which I assumed since you seem to know that the engine is running hot.

Replace the fan relay switch. The relay switch is tripped when the temperature sensor tells the computer the engine is too hot.

Until you get the relay switch replaced, you can either by-pass the relay switch and directly connect the fans to the battery, or turn on your A/C ALL the time and use it at a minimum setting. This will keep the cooling fans running at all times.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Radiator fan not working

Hi. Check the bottom of the radiator or on the side, as you also have a temperature-sending switch. The switch must reach a certain temperature before sending a signal on to the fan relay.

The switch just screws into the radiator.

If you would like to contact me again about this or other problems, feel free to do so.
