2002 Subaru outback was idling rough and sometimes lungeing. Check engine light came on and when put on a machine it showed that the car was misfiring in 3 cylinders. Changed the plugs to find oil in them. Replaced valve gasket cover and the gaskets around the plugs. Ran fine right after but the next day back to the same rough idle and lungeing.

flashing light most always means missfire. could even be crossed wires.to the plugs. you really need a code reader and find the trouble code . but in the mean time make sure the firing order is correct. good luck .gary
there are two ways your car controls its idle the throttle position sensor and the idle air control. if the idle is rough or wanders get the idle air control checked and cleaned up. its the most common poor idle fix
u should definitely get ur engines computer system scanned to avoid misdiagnosing ur isssue. once u retrieve ur eng codes u can then begin to decide which one of ur 25 sensors are acting up, or where to start lookin an testing for ur fault..... good luck
There is a distinct possibilty there is engine damage caused when the belt broke. It is best not to turn the engine at all once this happens. Sometimes you can be lucky and there be no damage. Let's hope that's so in your case. These belts are supposed to be replaced every 100,000km.
does it click while reversing straight or while turning? Sounds like a stick shift. Lunging probably due to e-brake needing adjustment(if stick shift). If your car only clicks while turning in reverse you need new front axles and can probably drive that way for a while
You need to replace your idle air controller (IAC). IAC basically opens and closes the throttle at idle so it stays at constants RPM. Hope this helps. Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa.
Turn off engine . get the vehicle on level ground. try to move driveshaft back an forth or,by rocking in twist motion,,, try to hear a knock,,,this would indicate a worn universal joint.either front or back, if you are good enough to discern which one is making the klunk, change both to be on the safe side. think they may be about 20 dol apiece.
looks like you need a good tune up its a little early for this engine but i have seen alot of bad plug wires this year. so at least plugs and wires. i think this should cure your problem later paul
