It sounds like it may be you speed sensor at the transmission which is also called Vehicle Velocity Sensor (VVS), The sensor or the wire harness may have gone bad and needs to be replaced, but it's a good thing to have your car scanned at Auto Zone since they scan free of charge. I just want to make sure it is the VVS and not the transmission Control Module (TCM), Check the fuse under the dash and under the hood and look for any blown fuse like the TCM fuse. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted

On the transmission there are two sensors, an input speed sensor and an output speed sensor. The problem is either the output speed sensor or the transmission controller, however it is probably 10 to 1 the speed sensor. If you are looking down at the trans from the front of the car, the speed sensor is located at center of the bell. you will see one by the engine and another near the back. The output speed sensor is furthest from the engine. Un plug the connection and unscrew it from the case. The input and out put look similar, but the threads are different so check the new one to make sure you were given the right one from the supplier.

SOURCE: 99 chrysler cirrus lxi won't shift out of 2nd, no speedometer

Had the same problem on my 1999 cirrus lxi. Replaced the output speed sensor on the tranny and topped off the tranny fluid... cleared the check engine light and the cirrus ran great. Caution...the output speed sensor reqires removal of the front left tie and plastic weatherproofing to replace. once you find it's locvation, the replacement is relatively easy.

1999 chrysler cirrus LXi will sometimes not shift up, leading to high rpms at around 40MPH and above

Something different. There are multiple shift solenoids inside the transmission. Take it to a reputable transmission specialist and have them give you an estimate.

2000 cirrus want change gears goes in drive and reverse inside on the dash where it tells you what gear you in all has squares around them speedometer doesn't work

Sounds like a speed sensor, I will look into that, but if the speedometer isn't working, its either cable, or electronic. Being a 2000, I'm guessing electronic. Chrysler have a lot of electronics on the transmission, as they are electronic themselves. I had an alternator go bad and my battery died, and the car wouldn't shift, it actually down shifted while driving. Have your battery and alternator checked first, then sensors. Like shift silinoid, speed sensor etc.

1999 chrysler cirrus not shifting out of 1st gear

Speedometer sensor is usually in the cars computer. Sounds like it's electrical though. Could be a sensor part of the alternator. Call Advanced or auto zone. Some places can test stuff like that for free.
