My 1995 Ford F350 Diesel Dualy has a Jasper tranny that won't go into third...could it be the transmission control module? It only has 160K miles on it and just had the tranny serviced.

Just took the truck on a 300 mile drive..150 of which we towed a trailer..did great now it won't shift into third. Could the transmission control unit have gone bad? Is that likely on a Jasper tranny?

It could be the module, but you should not just start replacing things without a proper diagnosis. You need to scan the computer for error codes, if no codes exist the problem is likely mechanical and you will have to do further tests on the hydraulic s and transmission electronincs. This is beyond the scope of drive way repair and you may be better having it towed to a local shop.

SOURCE: 1994 F350 transmission intermittent problem

I had the same problem in my 96 f-350. The transmission has slipped recording a slip code in the transmission. You can pull the codes and get it. I shifts into a safe mode that increases the pressure inside your transmission as part od a fail safe. Plain and simple, you have to have the tranny rebuilt.

SOURCE: Transmission service

I have a 99 F150 with 92,500 mi. on it and I have never had mine done and I tow lots of things. The key to transmission fluid and filter change is, if the trans shifts bad or does not pull the same then change it before you do any more troubleshooting, if you change it and still have problems then additional troubleshooting will be necessary. If you want to service your trans for peace of mind then change the fluid and filter, make sure that the level is full and correct. $150 dollars for an oil change on a light duty pickup is a little pricy.

SOURCE: tow/haul light comes on gauge shows HOT

Does the trans fluid have a burnt smell and is it brown or dark brown as opposed to a red wine color? If this is the case then you may have a service issue caused by a clogged trans filter which is what this sounds a great deal like and the sooner you get the truck to the dealer or your mechanic the better as the trans in these are not cheap to rebuild or replace.

I have a 1995 f350 with a 7.3 diesel with an automatic transmission that will stop shifting from 2nd to 3rd after it runs for about 25 to 30 miles or so stop shifting

3 possible senerios
Check the the fluid level is on the hot oil mark (in drive) on the dipstick. Too much oil will aeriate and overheat and lower operating pressure in the tranny causing band and clutch package slippage causing more problems adjust to correct mark
2-- have a pressure test done on the tranny for low operating prerssures from failing pumps and blocked filters.
3-- check oil lines to tranny cooler are not bent kinked or blocked
Check the oil colour It should be a bright cherry red but if it is dirty black or brownish it indicates the oil is burning and the tranny should be looked at.

Leak somwhere in the tranny coolant system

hello! judging by the key words in your statement, i assume your coolant has an oily type residue in it? very slimy?...tranmsisison oil coolers rarely fail on your type vehicle. it is more likely that your engine oil cooler has ruptured and has allowed the intermix of fluids. if that is not your concern, disregard and assume my ADHD has kicked into high gear!..by the way...your ford 6.0 diesel came with a manufacturers warranty on the engine of 5 years, 100,000 miles (with $100 deduct) if you are in these parameters...see your local Ford dealer!
