once the belt become loose it slips and its friction surfaces become damaged .. even if its then tightened properly it may still slip .. an old damaged belt should be replaced and tensioned properly ... its common for older type belts to slip and make noise .. it is not as common in later cars since they often have automatic belt tension and improved belts .. any slipping is a sign of some other problem ... one frequently seen problem on some cars is a pulley that is spring loaded to keep the belt properly tightened .. the pivot on the pulley freezes up and no longer maintains proper tension .. those pulleys can sometimes be re lubed but often are hopelessly frozen and need replaced ... also other pulleys and the alternator bearings can start to make a squeaking noise when the sealed bearings lose there lube .. you can put a drop of oil on each bearing to see if one quiets the sound ..
ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT SLIPPING BELT TENSION NEED ADJUSTING OR DRIVE BELT WORN GLAZED.CHECK ALTERNATOR BATTERY FEED WIRE AND FIELD WIRE FOR LOOSENESS AND DAMAGE.OR THE THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR COULD BE FAULTY.
It very well could be the tensioner if it does not sit straight, or the idler pulley if the bearings have gone out, but usually 99% of the time it is the power steering pulley that is pulling out from the power steering pump, and that is usually what is causing the belt to mis-align especially at the waterpump pulley, check the alignment of that pulley very well.
now cars have a this sensor that if the car get over heated it ll lose power and shut off most of the time this is do too water pump, thermostat your drive belt slipping radiator fan , i would check for leaks or even your fan check to see if it kicks on pull on you belt if it feels loose it need to be changed also make sure that theres no leaks oil on the belt to make the belt slip . i hope all of these help you
Sounds like the belt is just too loose or the belt might be wore out. when it slips it squeals. when you turn on your A/C it slips alot more making it squeal louder. Hope this helps...
look around the power steering pump, (Under or maybe behind) you should see a belt tensioner, loosen it and any other brackets close to that have a sliding point, once loose, the belt should slip right6 off, pay close attichion to the way it comes off, you don't wanna put it back on backwards, or your water pump will run in the wrong direction and cause it to over heat
If it's not a serpetine belt, max deflection of 3/4" on longest segment should be safe, don't make alternator belt tight as a drum or you will burn out alternator bearings quickly. If it has serpentine belt, the spring tensioner should keep the belt properly tensioned unless it's worn out.
It only needs to be tight enough to not slip, too loose will squeal and you will have to tighten, to tight will kill alternator and you will spend $$.
