Check transmission fluid. Torque converter needs ALOT of fluid to work .

Common indication of transmission problems happens when the transmission jumps out of gear while moving. Most noticeably, the linkage jumping problems will occur from the reverse position. Jumping out of gear indicates that the linkage holding the gears can be worn or broken. Often the gears will return to normal when the car is put back into first gear, but the transmission should be checked, because the slippage could be the beginning of serious problems that won't allow the gears to shift at all. it might be the start up gear or the transmission or engine might need to check the oil. i think that the transmission needs replacing.

Check the automatic transmission fluid in your gear box.

Usually when a manual shift transmission starts jumping out of gear it's because the synchronizers are worn. The transmission will more than likely have to be repaired and or rebulit by a reputable transmission shop.

gear syncronizers are worn...transmission needs rebuilding or replacement!!hopefully this helps

It's called accelleration.

If we are talking about a manuel transmission, then what you are describing are bad syncros in the transmission. Syncros are brass rings inside the transmission that hold your gears in the proper selected range. when worn they allow your selected gear to pop out.

Sounds like a stripped reverse gear. And for the second gear probally need a new gear (1st 2nd) and the syncros with a new hub. If too much metal from the gears has already made it's way around in the bearings through the transmission oil you might be looking at a new transmission. The Golf 3 generation had many problems with reverse gears. Sorry to be the one to tell you.
