Hi there. Black smoke is usually an indication that the fuel ratio is too rich - using too much fuel. An emmisions tester and engine diagnosic machine can identify which cylinders are running rich, but as a quick check, once you have the engine at normal operating temperture, simply remove each spark plug and look at the colour of the centre core - it should be a light grey colour. I think you will find that either one of more plugs will be black indicating a rich mixture on a particular cylinder. You then need to identify the reason for the rich mixture - most likely an injector not closing properly or an Injection ECU problem. My recommendation is to firstly visit a Tuning Shop and have them hook the engine up to a tester and see what the readings say. Hope this helps, Scottech.

White smoke coming from my X-Type Jaguar from the back

White smoke from tail pipe normally means you are burning coolant. Could be a blown head gasket. With car running, check for sweet smell from tail pipe, if you do, it's coolant burning. Also see if you have coolant running out of tail pipe. You can also remove spark plugs and see if they look clean or like new. Another indicator that coolant is making it's way into engine cylinders. Could only be going into one of all.

Valve guide seals

Are you saying you have smoke coming out of the tail pipe ? Or is something dripping onto the exhaust pipe and burning ?
If the smoke is coming out of the tail pipe, is it blue, white, or black ?

Why is my 1993 jaguar xj6 smoking

It's tough to say... White smoke means you probably have a blown head gasket. Blue smoke indicates your running too rich. black smoke is probably oil... tell us more.

It is burning oil. Possibly bad valve seals or worn rings.

Exhaust smoke - 1994 XJ6 4.0

you have bad valve seals again and it is possible that the valve guides are bad ( to much play ) i worked for Jaguar 13 years and i have done 100's of these and very few needed guides it sound like the seals where not done correctly at the last repair.

a blown head gasket is white smoke from the tail pipe, black smoke is a sign that it is running to rich. yourproblem sounds like a timing problem.
