I am ready to replace just the rod cap bearings on my 2002 Montero sport 3.5, dual cam, 2wdr. I am only replacing the connecting cap bearings as the the rest of the assembly is in good condition, so I believe. I needed to take of the suction screen assembly and clean it as it was clogged up pretty bad. In the process the upper oil pan had to be removed and there they were the connecting rod bearings. I took one cap off and the bearing is in good condition, however, thought I would replace them anyway. As they are in good condition should I replace them with the standard size set and just how much white grease to you apply before reassembling them? I have 2002, Montero sport, 2wdr., 3.5 dual cam.
If they are in good condition, why replace them? Replace them with the same exact size you remove from them. You do not have to go 20 over or 30 over unless you have the engine or crankshaft turned at a shop where they remove a small amount of metal to make the surfaces nice. If that happens, you would need to compensate for that metal removal by installing an over sized bearing. But the shop would also be required to inform you on what size if that happened.
I use a prerun grease that is black. really doesn't matter as long as it is thick enough to stay until your ready to start the motor. Don't forget to prefill your new oil filter with new oil. This will decrease the time that oil fills the filter and save milliseconds that could cause damage to new parts. Also, go to the auto store and buy a bottle of zinc additive for the first breakin period of the engine bearings. Zinc is a very needed substance in the oil for new engines. It will help protect your engine during break in period. I use the lucas brand and pour it in with the new oil. I also use Castrol oil because it keeps engine parts clean and I have used it all my life, (my preference only) Stick with the 30wt oils because they seem to have the better additives needed, but use the zinc on first 500 miles. Take your time with what your doing, any mistake will mean disaster in a very short time. I know by experience it doesn't take more then 25mph to seize an engine. Clean your passages also. Anything stuck in a passage will crash a motor faster then you can shut it off. Watch you oil pressure and be sure it comes up quickly when first starting. All that hard work your doing, you better check yourself over and over for mistakes.

SOURCE: How to change horn on 1998 montero sport
Just changed my horns on my 98 Montero Sport and come to find out it was the horn relay. The horn relay is located near your power steering resivour its a small black square you will see some electrical lines running to it. Give it a couple taps and then try out your horn again. If that dosnt work your horns are located right behind your turn signals on your front bumper, they are circluar 3in and golden colored. You can get dealer ship replacement horns for 30 plus dollars or go to a autozone or advance auto and get aftermarket ones

If you are sure that you have removed everything that is holding the cover to the head, you may need to use a bit of force to get it off as it may be glued in place. If your plugs go in through the cover, they must be removed .
