Why did my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe sudden lost power while driving?

First the radio blinked on and off and I felt the car losing power and hesitating. So I guess it was going on and off then. I cut the radio off and keep riding about 2 more minutes down the road and started going up a hill. The car completely went dark. All lights on the dash, the clock and everything went out. I could barely steer it to the side of the road. I took the key out, waited and then tried the turn the key. Nothing lit up, nothing on the dash, not the clock, nothing. My outside lights work, and we did try to jump the car. The window also will not roll back up. My power locks work, but my power windows don't. My outside signal lights and headlights work, but nothing else electrical on the car does. Where do I start to find out the problem?

    Fixed! It was the Alternator fuse and it costed less than $4 to replace. Costed me $130 to get the darn thing towed home though. Ugh, cars.~

What happened when you tried jumping the car? sounds like it could be a bad ignition switch since only non-switched things work.

    Not a single sound, nothing flickered, nothing clicked. My headlights work, my power door locked work. My power windows do not work, so my windows are stuck rolled down. My uncle suggested I check the starter wire and fuse box to see if anything has blown. That's the only lead i've gotten so far as to what may have happened.

SOURCE: 1996 Subaru Legacy No Power At All

Last night I checked the battery and it was still good. I disconnected and then reconn ected both terminals and that brought the power back. When I turned the key the power went out again. I repeated the procedure but did not turn the key. Instead, I took off the knee bolster and tried to wiggle the wires under the dash to see if I could find the source since it seems to be related to the ignition. Nothing cut the power so I started it up and it worked fine except for the check engine light which was flashing that says I have a misfire condition. I drove the car 25 miles to work this morning and will be taking it to the dealer for a better inspection.

SOURCE: won't start

There could be a short in or near the ignition switch.

SOURCE: 2002 Hyundai Accent lost power

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, definitely an electrical issue. Some ideas to check, consider and/or explore:

  • IGN switch - check for loose, corroded or heating connections. To test, under normal usage of the vehicle, should feel warm but not overly hot. If so, then possibly loose connection;
  • fuse/relay box - check for loose, corroded or burned terminals, holders, clips and connectors/pins. Use an electrical contact cleaner and spray. It may also be necessary to scrape to remove burnt marks/corrosion;
  • fusible link - the battery would have 2 wires connected to the + terminal. The big wire goes to the starter, the smaller of the two is the electrical systems main wire. This normally goes to the fuse/relay box. Check for frayed ends, loose connection, corroded terminals. In some instances instead of being at the battery's + terminal, it is connected to the end of the big cable down at the starter motor.
  • ALL connectors with big wires - these carry the main +12 either as always ON, ACC or IGN. If a connector has a wire bigger than the others, check them. It may be necessary to disconnect to enable you access to the inside pins/terminals. Scrape them clean.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi, behind your climate control panel is something called the Electronic Timing and Control Module (ETACM). This is like a computer for the chassis. All of the troubles you mention are tied into the ETACM. If you could find a used module at a salvage yard, it may solve your problems at a reasonable cost. To troubleshoot the problem will be very difficult and must be left to the dealer, which could be expensive. Just the same, I have included a few of the wiring diagrams in case you have a good multimeter and would like to try troubleshooting.

2003 Hyundai Santa Fe Lost power now won't start

Sounds like the timming belt jumped or broke. A faulty crank sensor could also be at fault.

When asking a question about a problem with your vehicle you should always state your vehicles od reading and engine size, thanks.
