Re: What does the battery's negative cable look like and...
It will be the black one. If you do not have different colored cables then look at the battery. There will be a negative sign embossed on the battery itself. You will also notice that one terminal is usually larger than the other.

Put on safety glasses and gloves
Ensure the car is turned off
Locate the battery
Determine which is the positive and which is the negative terminal Remove boxes or tape covering the end of the cable
Disconnect the negative cable
Disconnect the positive cable Remove the battery
Remove the negative cable, then the positive
Compare the new and old cables Prepare the new cables for installation Attach the positive cable to the starter
Attach the negative cable to the body or block Place the battery back in the car Connect the positive battery cable to the battery
Connect the negative cable
Start the car
Use a wrench to remove the negative and positive battery cables: They are clearly labeled "+" and "-." Always remove the negative cable first, as this isolates the power to the metal parts of your car. Tuck the cables away from the battery as you don't want them to accidentally touch a battery terminal when you're wiring your alternator.
3
Locate the alternator terminals. There are two: one marked "live," "pos" or "+" and the other marked "neg," "field" or "-."
4
Locate the two cables. The positive (red) cable goes to your battery via a wire loom or harness. The negative (black) cable attaches to a metal part of your car.
5
Check how the cables attach to the alternator terminals. Some connect using eyelets that hook over the terminal and tighten with a bolt; others connect by inserting the wire under the terminal and tightening a bolt.
6
Loosen the two bolts using a suitable-sized wrench or, if the cables connect using eyelets, remove the bolts.
7
Insert the exposed end of the negative (black) cable under the loosened bolt on the negative terminal of the alternator, then tighten the bolt. If the cable has an eyelet, hook it over the terminal and screw the bolt back in place and tighten using a wrench.
8
Insert the exposed end of the positive (red) cable under the loosened bolt on the positive terminal of the alternator, then tighten the bolt. If the cable has an eyelet, hook it over the terminal and screw the bolt back in place and tighten using a wrench.
9
Replace the positive battery cable on the positive battery terminal using a wrench. Replace the negative battery cable on the negative battery terminal.

using your testlight remove the battery negative cable then hook your testlight between the cable end and, the negative battery post. all doors closed; everything off; the test light should light.

Battery cables can be purchased at any auto parts store. Always remove the Negative cable first. The positive cable connects to the solenoid to the starter. After removing both cables, connect the positive cable to eh solenoid to the starter, and route it up to the battery. If the new battery has protective caps on it, leave them on for now. Connect the negative cable to the ground. Connect the positive cable to the battery (remove the caps) Once secure, connect the negative cable to the battery (be very careful not to touch anything metal) IMPORTANT: Make sure the Positve cable is connected tot eh Positeve battery terminal (indicated by the + sign. The Negative cable connects to teh Negative post indicated by the - sign. I hope this answers your question fully and best of luck to you!
