I have changed the air filter&spark plugs&it still does it.! what can i do.?why would it only do it sometimes& not all the time, and the check engine light does come on some of the time than go off?
Sounds like an vacume leek check all the vacume lines with soapy water in sqert bottle spre lines if eng changes sound idle up or down theres your problem...
More specifically than a mere vacuum leak, it sounds like the EGR valve is sticking, or maybe a sticking EGR solenoid. Start by verifying the proper operation of the EGR valve.

Remove the spark plug wires, remove the spark plugs, replace them. Do this one cylinder at a time if you never did it. On that year you may need to remove the upper intake to access the plugs on one side. In that case go to a shop. This would not be a novice job.

youll also need a 8mm socket to remove the coil hold down bolts

you have to get a reading of the on board diagnostic system, Autozone read it for free . then they will print a code for you that will show which part is causing the problem (oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter )

I"d lean toward the dirstributor itself. You were right to check the timing but a balky distributor would cause occaisional mis-fires. Apart from that, the timing chain itself would be the next likely culprit.
