Car will only go into reverse once when cold

When I first start car, i can only reverse once. I usually park strategically so that I will only need to reverse once. If the car is warmed up, it is not an issue. If I need to reverse again, I sit for a few minutes in park and then it will allow the shift into reverse. What could be wrong?

Could indicate dirty transmission oil
bad harness connections or faulty reverse servo/ solenoids needing heat to operate properly
run the fault codes to see if any sensor shows up

SOURCE: 2006 Nissan X Trail Gear Shift Stuck in Park.

This is not a permanent fix, but you'll be able to shift and drive...this is a "safety feature" when you're break lights aren't working...it may be a fuse issue, i found that didn't help either.

How to drive it while it's "broken" On the top left of your gear shift is circle that looks like a button that is only 3/4 there...see picture (it's circled in red)

e024280.jpg
pry that off with a key or something... now restart your car, push on the break and at the same time insert a key or something into the now open hole...while pushing down use the other key to shift into reverse. You will need to do the same thing to shift back into park.

Good heavens that is the most inneficient safety feature I've ever heard of. How about instead of leaving the car immoble and keeping you in a scetchy neihborhood to get mugged they just "invent" a warning light notification. grr

SOURCE: 2006 Altima won't shift into reverse or park

Is there any warning lights or malfunction besides this?? There are three main parts that may cause this: Park/Neutral safety switch(located on the transmission), Brake pedal switch(located at the brake pedal), Shift lock solenoid(located below the shifter). P/N safety switch prevents the shifter from shifting out of (P) or shifting into (R/P) while vehicle is in motion. Brake pedal switch sends a signal to release the shifter lock to shift out of park. Shift lock, locks the shifter as describe above and is located at the shifter base. I recommend inspection/replacement of the shift lock solenoid and P/N safety switch as its an intermitted problem. Hopefully this helps

Jerking when car is in reverse

Check your transmission fluid. the car needs to be driven for about 20 minutes and you need to leave the engine running but in park. The fluid should be at least to the cold level and should be pink in color (use a white paper towel to clear the dipstick after you pull it out once and then put it back in again. If the fluid is dark and runny, start with a drain and flush to see if that does't help things.

How do I check the gearbox oil level on a 2.1 manual

not too familiar with this model , but from experience with other makes, theres usually a fill level plug near to the drain plug (they usually look the same)that if removed whilst filling it will spill oil from it thus telling you that the correct level is achieved, hope this helped

Would need to know more. Did the 'check engine' light come on about the time you first noticed this happening? If so, have the code checked for diagnosis. I would suspect FUEL TRIM error (or similar) in the computer compensating the fuel injection when the car is put in gear versus in Park or Neutral when cold.
