SOURCE: 97 ford expedition 4x4

does the whinning noise decrease or go away when u decelarate? this is the key to a proper diagnosis. if it does, then your problem eather ring & pinion gears or related bearings (these are all in the center part of the diff.) if it does not change, the problem is in the wheel bearings, or rough tread on the tires. the former is expensive(4 or 5 hundred), the latter is not so bad(a hundred or so). u could try raising it up & supporting it under axel housing, have a friend run it up to about 40mph as u listen with a hose or stethescope to pinpoint the noise

SOURCE: ignition alarm will not stop 97 ford f150

The key switch usually breaks or wears out and makes contact. It is on the lock cylinder. This would cause the chime to not come on, or stay on. Sounds like the switch is bad.

1997 F-150/250 Warning Chime, Key-In-Ignition The key-in-ignition chime warns that the key is still in the ignition when the driver's door is ajar. The key-in-ignition warning chime will sound when:

  • GEM: Driver door is ajar, the ignition switch is in the OFF/LOCK or ACC position and the keys are in the ignition.
  • CTM: Driver door is ajar, the ignition switch is in the OFF/LOCK, ACC or RUN position and the keys are in the ignition.
The key-in-ignition warning chime will stop sounding when:
  • Driver door is closed.
  • Key is removed from the ignition.
  • GEM: Ignition switch is switched to the RUN position.
The key-in-ignition warning chime inputs are:
  • Ignition switch RUN position (battery potential on both RUN and RUN/ACC inputs).
  • Ignition switch ACC position (battery potential on RUN/ACC input only).
  • Key-in-ignition switch (grounded with key-in-ignition, open circuit with key-out).
  • LH door ajar switch (open circuit with door closed, grounded with door ajar).
This is a pic for a 98, could not find one for 97 which may be the older style which is more prone to break.

SOURCE: locked out of 1998 ford expedition with my keys in

well you may be able to get a tow truck to open it for about $50.00-$75.00,or you can gently pry the door open just enough to put a straightened out metal coat hanger in there to hit the door lock button..you should hang a spare key with a dog chain hook under your truck to a wire for just incase times

SOURCE: 1998 Ford Expedition won't start after changeing ignition.

Yes. You have to take the car to a ford dealer and have the new key programmed. This should solve your problem. Good luck.

I lost keys to my 97 expedition I got a new ignition and new keys how do I program the keys to work with the pats system

To program new keys to work with the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) on a 1997 Ford Expedition, you will need to have two working programmed keys available. If you do not have any working keys, you will need to have the PATS module reprogrammed by a Ford dealership or a locksmith that specializes in Ford vehicles.
Once you have two working keys, here are the steps to program new keys to the PATS system:
  1. Insert the first working key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position (do not start the engine).
  2. Within 5 seconds, insert the second working key and turn it to the "On" position.
  3. Within 10 seconds of inserting the second key, turn both keys to the "Off" position.
  4. Remove both keys from the ignition.
  5. Insert the new key you want to program into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position.
  6. Within 10 seconds, turn the key to the "Off" position and remove it from the ignition.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for any additional new keys you want to program.
The PATS system should now recognize the new key and it should be able to start the engine. If the new key does not work, please consult with an Ford Dealer or Automotive Locksmith to assist you with the programming.

1997 Ford Expedition. I lost the only key to my Expedition. I have an ignition with a key from my old expedition. Can I just swap them?

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to model category.

It depends. If the key turns and doesn't start, you may be able to reset the security system.

  1. Insert the key into the driver's side door lock.
  2. Turn the key once, but not all the way to unlock the door. Leave the key in this position for 40-60 seconds. ...
  3. Do this again, but turn the key in the opposite direction.
  4. Remove the key from the door, get into your Ford, and start the engine. The system should be reset.

Getting my 97 Ford expedition into neutral without a key

Brake-shift interlock The brake-shift interlock feature prevents you from shifting from P(Park) unless the brake pedal is depressed (with the ignition in the On position). If you cannot move the gearshift out of P(Park) with the brake pedal depressed: 1. Turn ignition key to Off. 2. Apply the parking brake. 3. Turn ignition key to Lock and remove the key. 4. Re-insert the ignition key and turn it to Off. 5. Shift the transmission to N(Neutral). 6. Start the vehicle. If you need to use the above procedure, it is possible that a fuse has blown and your brakelamps may not be functioning. Refer to the Roadside emergencies chapter for instructions on replacing fuses.
