sounds like a short in the system
what is the state of charge of the battery right now?
will the engine turn over?
does it click?
SOURCE: How do you check if altenator is charging battery,
Most vehicles if you get the car running and unhook the positive battery cable it will stay running that is because it is running off the alternator. if it dies like your talking about I would most definitely say your alternator needs to be replaced. Most likely when you jumped your father in laws pick up there was a bad ground somewhere and your alternator got a surge of electricity and it fried it. Hope this helps.

check to see if 12v at alt power terminal then unplug three wire connector with key on should have 12v at green wire with red stripe 12v at black with orange (could also be grey with yellow)may be a white with black wire with 6v when running plugged in

OKAY, FIRST THING THE OIL LITGH WILL COME ON WHEN IT CUTS OFF . WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY ON THE OIL LIGTH COMES ON W/MORE LITGHS UNTIL YOU CRANK IT . SECOND WHEN THEY CHANGED THE BATTERY THE COMPUTER HAS TO RELEARN THE ENGINE WOULD UNHOOK BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE TO RESET IT ,THEN DRIVE IT FOR A COUPLE MILES NOT WHERE YOU HAVE TO STOP ALOT .

sounds like a dirty plug connection somewhere, unplug what plug ends you pulled off and try cleaning the contacts inside plugs, good luck this should help
