1996 Dodge Caravan instrument cluster Intermittent on-off

About a month ago: Warning lights "air bag", "check engine", randomly on and off. One day, speedometer and gauges didn't register at all for several minutes. several times alarm has randomly gone off.
Starting engine: Three times in past four weeks, engine would start up for moment and stop, then not start at all. Would start up after simply waiting random/inconsistent periods of time...Once, it started again in 15 minutes, another had to wait an overnight.
No problems driving it really. Just worry about 'will it start today?'
My mechanic says to check body control module. If thats the issue, whats the least expensive remedy?

Check all the connections to the BCM for corrosion, and spray some WD-40 on them and wiggle them. See if that changes anything. Look for loose connections or damage.

SOURCE: The instrument cluster doesn't always come on and

I would first check (pull and re-plug) any connectors you can spot under the dashboard. This kind of annoyance can come from a single contact set that isn't contacting all the time.

SOURCE: headlights, entire instrument cluster, radio,

Multiple problems like these leads me to think you should:
Check the Relays and Power-to-the-Relays in the IPM located in the engine compartment (also referred to as the fuse box); especially the Accessory Relay. Most these Relays have similiar size/type Relays inside the box. Switch out known working relays with suspected not working relays and check the known working function. If it now does not work, it is the Relay.
If this does not work, then there is possibly a wiring issue.
Let me know if this worked or not or if you have any additional questions.

SOURCE: 1999 dodge caravan intermittent instrument cluster

This Seems Indicative Of a Poor Connection AT The CLUSTER Or A Junction Connecter Close to the Cluster. This is Assuming you Have Ruled OUT ALL ABS COMPONENTS, LOOK at These VERY CLOSLY Because of the Small Volts These Wires Carry , the SMALLEST DEFECT WILL Cause this Type of Symptom that you have given. Please try all of the Above, I feel Confedint that athis is where your Problem Is.

Fuses ok,light in dash tested and works. But check engine light does not come on when you turn on the ignition. What else should I check? This is a ford ranger XLT 4x4 4.0L V6-245cid engine (pushrod)

The instrument cluster (10849) carries out a display proveout to verify that all warning/indicator lamps and monitored systems are functioning correctly. When the ignition switch (11572) is in the ON position with the engine (6007) off, the following indicators will illuminate:
  • CHECK ENGINE/malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
  • CHECK GAGE warning indicator.
  • Charge system warning indicator.
  • Anti-lock brake warning indicator (ABS).
  • Safety belt warning indicator (60second proveout).
  • Air bag indicator.
  • An indicator is inoperative - CHECK ENGINE/malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
  • Bulb.
  • Circuitry.
  • Instrument cluster printed circuit.
  • Powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650).
  • GO to Pinpoint Test N .

Warning lights panel doesn't come on. No warning lights.

Check your ground connection to the warning light cluster. Either the ground wire has come loose or the connection to the chassis has corroded.

We have an intermittent problem with the instrument cluster. You will be driving along and the entire cluster dies. No tach, no speedometer, no lights, etc. Usually within the next 3 or 4 times the van is...

This is a bad connection within the printed circuit of the instument cluster. It seems to be worse in higher temps, like being in the sun with the windows up for several hours. (I feel it should be a recall) Sometimes a firm tap on the face of the cluster will bring it back, but the only solution at this point is to repace the cluster.

For 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan, instrument clusters with light when ignition turn on, but there's no crank and no start. Battery just changed five months ago

I have a similar problem. Do you also notice the gauges on the instrument panel going out from time to time? (Have to slap the dashboard.) I have been told the start problem is related to a problem with the instrument panel (a control unit contained therein). I have found at times turning the key to the ON position for a few seconds (odometer lights stabilize) before moving to the START position sometimes helps.

Unfortunately, replacing the instrument cluster/control unit can cost up to $600-700. I am not a mechanic, but have inquired about this for my own Caravan. Good luck.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON

First go to the bank. Usually the instrument cluster is controlled by a circuit board that is replaced by removing the dash, steering column and air bags which are dangerous to fool with. Any yellow wiring is air bag related so watch out.

1996 dodge grand caravan died while driving, wont turn over? WHAT DOES TURN OVER MEAN TO YOU? STARTER DEAD OR ENGINE DEAD ONLY.

I had similar problem with Durango and replaced the "brain" with a refurbished PCM -- google for reburbished PCMs and call the Florida Company and ask they guys there what they think. My fix was < $300.00 by replacing the brain.

No service engine soon light when I try to get trouble codes

It comes on when the key is turned on to show it works, then it goes out as soon as the engine is started, it has a fuse, that will be marked, if the fuse is ok then you may have either a bad connection at the cluster connector or a bad ECM

1998 Dodge Grand Caravan. Whenever the ABS warning light comes on, there seems to be some sort of short that causes the rest of the instrument panel to die. No illumination, no gages working. When the ABS...

I had the same problem. Abs light would come on and I would lose all dash instruments. Hit a bump on the road and abs light would go off and dash would come back on. What I did to fix problem, lol I slaped the dash just to the right of instrument panel and it all came back to life. There seems to be a short there, and I slaped it back 3 times in a week and now for the last month it has stayed on.
