How do i remove brake drum on 1994 318i bmw - 1994 BMW 318

Hi, what you feel is your anti-lock brake actuator pumping the brakes. This is probably due to dirty/dusty or improperly adjusted brake shoes causing the rear brakes to lock. It is also possible that you have a leak in one or both rear brake cylinders. Have your rear brakes checked, cleaned, and adjusted. If you would like to do it yourself, I can provide instructions--just let me know.

Rear brakes or Front Brakes? Once the rear drums are removed you have access to all the brake parts for the rear brakes. As far as the front pads are concernedonce you remove teh wheel you ahve access to the caliper assembly which is removed by loosening the two retaining bolts on the back side of the caliper and it lifts off to remove and replace the pads themselves then goes right back on. You will need an Allen Wrench of the proper size to remove the retaining bolts, a caliper compressor to do the front brakes. To remove the rear brakes once the drum is removed you have to use a brake repair tool or a large Flat head screwdriver and a large pair of needle nose pliers. The initial retaining clips for the rear brakes can be removed by grasping the exposed end and turning 90 degrees then use the screwdriver to stretch and leverage off the spring assemblies that operate the brakes.

you can't. there's those star nuts that are supposed to do it, but they don't work. You can access the star legs through the access hole on the drum. spin them till the drum stops. Test the hand brake and you'll find it still doesn't stop the car while moving. BMW engineering.....brilliant.

remove cover between seats to expose cable adjusters and back them off till slack. jack up rear of car (chock front wheels) remove a rear wheel stud and you can view the star wheel adjuster inside the drum, with a thin screwdriver wind it up till wheel locks then back off about 15 clicks, do same on other wheel, wind up adjusters inside car till wheels lock at about 5 clicks, check for binding when h / brake is fully down, thats it.

The handbrake shoes are in the drum. They use a dual rear brake system. The discs are operated by the pedal and the handbrake operates the shoes in the drum.

What do you mean "under" the hub?


Adjusting the emerg brake is difficult. You have to adjust the brakes in the drum first, then the cable.

Removal & Installation

1. Remove the hub cap and loosen the lug nuts.
2. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on jackstands.
3. Remove the lug nuts, tire and wheel.
4. Release the parking brake.
5. Pull the brake drum from the hub. If difficult to remove try the following:
   1. Strike the face of the drum with a plastic or rubber mallet. This will break free any rust that may develop between the drum and the hub.
   2. Install 2, M8x1.25mm bolts into the holes in the drum and gradually tighten them to pull the drum off the hub.

To install:

1. Install the brake drum to the hub.
2. Install the wheel.
3. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.
4. Road-test the vehicle to ensure that the brakes are working properly.

2. Drain the brake fluid, as necessary.
3. Release the parking brake.
4. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
6. Pull the brake drum from the hub. If difficult to remove try the following:
   1. Strike the face of the drum with a plastic or rubber mallet. This will break free any rust that may develop between the drum and the hub.
   2. Install 2, M8x1.25mm bolts into the holes in the drum and gradually tighten them to pull the drum off the hub.

i am assuming you are talking about drum brakes. and the drum is not coming off easily. as the drums wear they do not ride on the very outside which will cause a ridge to form and make it hard to remove them you just have to pry them off but pry evenly on two sides opposite of each other at the same time

remove the rear brake discs and you'll find the handbrake behind it. good luck.

this can be a simple proceedure, after rmoving the wheel you will see either 1/2 really rusty screws on the face plate, these will be very dificult to remove so i would recommend an impact driver. then once you have the screws undone you will have to chock the wheels to stop the car rolling forward or backwards, after doing this i would reccomend that you put car into gear as added safety. once done then you can release the handbrake allowing you to evenly pull drum off. if you try to pull one side or the other you will find the springs on the pads will not allow you to remove it so gently does it im fraid. if any moer probs wityh this one please just ask.
