SOURCE: 96 ford taurus

Had the same problem with a Ford Ranger 4 cylinder. It turned out being a blown head gasket between 3rd and 4th cylinder. Compression was blowing from one cylinder to the other. Some times it ran great then others it couldn't pull it's self.

SOURCE: 2000 TDI - Lots of white smoke at cold start.

Sounds like your injection pump timing is off, an injector is leaking or a bad seal on your IP.
VW dealers have a horrible reputation when it comes to TDI's. Check out the posts over at www.tdiclub.com Those guys are very knowledgeable - and the first thing they'll tell you is don't take it to a dealer.
You can probably find someone in your area that has a copy of Vag-Com (scantool software that vw uses) software that could look at your timing. It definitely sounds like your dealer was throwing parts at your car because they didn't know what your problem is. If I were you, I'd copy and paste your post from here over at www.tdiclub.com

It sounds like sticky injectors. Going on the age I assume its done more then a 100000 if not 200000 kms. The rule is with injectors is that you should service them every 100,000, unlike diesel injectors Petrel injector are cheap. A set might cos $120 but short of throwing it on a scan tool and mapping injector pulses and the cold start input I'd start there. The others thing it could be mixed up with is the cooled start sensor, playing up and over fuelling.

My Ford Taurus 2001 died while driving it. There was a small pop sound from under the hood before it died. It will restart but runs really really rough and dies again.

Hmmmmmmm.......I doubt your timing chain skipped.
Possible bad coil pack.Wasn't running hot or nearly out of oil?
If it's not a vacuum hose(large one)or fuel pump quitting, I'd say it's an internal engine problem.
Can you get someone to plug a code reader into it? don-ohio

Maybe fuel injector

if you are sure you changed the last coil on the fire wall side of the engine. you could have a bad fuel injector. to prove it ,you could move the # 3 injector to one of the front cylinders and see if the skip moves with it. if it does you know for sure what to do.
good luck chris
