2002 Saturn S-series Passlock needs to be reset

When we changed the battery the Passlock security light came on and now it won't start. How can I reset it?

  • kindhart1984 Jun 22, 2009

We tried this method, as it was suggested to us before and the security light never went off.

  • kindhart1984 Jun 22, 2009

Thanks :-) Where is that fuse located?

Try this first, it takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted, be glad to help

That is not good news friend, Check the fuse and see if the body control module (BCM) fuse has gone bad. It's been know from time to time i have heard the BCM has fried from replacing the battery and as the battery cables are reconnected ground first then positive will cause this. Positive should have been connected first thant then ground with out crating to much arching so the electrical system don't get a spike which fries the BCM. Good luck and keep me posted.

The fuses should be located in the center console under the heater controls, The fuse access panel is on the passenger side and the information to what the fuses and relays are is stamped on the inside of the fuse panel door. The panel just clips on so you need to give it a firm pull to remove it. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted.

I have the exact same car and am having the same problem. I tried the learn procedure 2 times, but still when I start my car it immediately shuts down and the security light flashes 5 times. Thier must be some other way to reset it surely.

I figured it out on my own. It turns out that inside the lock cylinder the mechanism that checks the resistance of the key was bad. I got a used switch assebly at a salvage yard for 20 bucks and installed it then tried the steps again and after about 30 mins I was driving again. I just thought that I would post my findings for future reference to anyone having the same troubles

I changed the battery on a 2002 Saturn l200 and now the security lights blink continuously, the car turns over but won't continue running

Remove the key, wait 10 minutes, try again. You must wait that long for the passlink system to reset. Make sure that you are using the keys that were sold with the car, not an aftermarket key.
If this doesn't fix it, send another message, I have the Saturn technical service manual on this car.

Could be starter, battery, battery cables, security key system module going bad, etc.
Check easiest things first. Battery condition and age, condition of cables, and connections at starter.

Battery went dead and now security sys. is activated and dealer wants to change body control module and the passlock sytem @ 1200.00 is this a ploy to get older vehicles off the road, kid in college cant...

That sounds to me like a shotgun repair from a dealer who is not able to, or just not capable of performing the correct diagnosis procedures to repair the security system, but it is highly un-likely that the entire security system would fail at one time.

That security system can be by-passed for a lot less than $1,200.00, and I know of one for about $45.00, and the passlock by-pass is not very hard to install at all.

Check out this link to view a security passlock by-pass system;

http://www.autotoys.com/x/catalog/GM_PASSLOCK_BYPASS_INTERFACE_FOR_REMOTE_STARTS_TYPE_II__CLASS_p_255.html

If I knew the exact year and make of that Saturn I might be able to come up with a procedure to by-pass that security system without having to purchase anything, and let me know if you require any further assistance.

2002 Saturn L200. Dealer told me I needed to replace the PCM and the passlock module. $800.00. Is there a way to bypass the passlock B.S. Please help car is not reliable. Have children.

no the power control module runs the whole car and the pass lock you maybe can do without it controls the security systems but the pcm is the brain of the car

Saturn L200 Passlock Problem

I have a very untechnical solution to this problem and I can't for the life of me remember where I heard it but it sure does work. Turn the igniton to ON so that the dash lights up. Eventually the others lights go out and the flashing "Securty" light stays. Keep the driver side door slightly ajar and sit and wait for that Security light to stop blink, usually 5-10 minutes. Once it stops blinking you can start your car. I can't promise that you won't have the starting problem again, but it will happen with decreasing frequency. Ultimately you need to have the passlock issue handled at a dealership. I say DEALERSHIP because it's a manufacturer flaw and they should be made aware of this issue everytime. They're also best equipped to handle it.
