My automatic td5 goes in gear but will not move forward or backwards

I was towing yesterday with no problems when suddenly the car would move forward but revs were high still. I switched ignition off & on again and it seemed ok so carried on towing - now it wont move forward or backwards.

The tranny may have an intercooler and the fluid levels could be low. Check your tranny fluid levels and inspect for leaks. This tranny cooler will be upfront and look like a small radiator.

SOURCE: 2000 Discover TD5 Auto harsh vibration under power at 2000 -2500

The "lift off and it goes away" is the clue I feel. This eliminates engine out of balance issues and points squarely to fueling issues. I would say try a compression test (always a good first start before you try much else) but with plenty of power and no vibration except in the range, probably not a compression issue. So, what's left? Fuel or air is the answer. Check air inlet path is from air filter to turbo and (more importantly) from turbo to intake manifold. Check wastegate on turbo is OK - disconnect the wastegate (it's bolted on to the turbo) hose, then **** on the wastegate hose, you should feel resistance. If not wastegate aneroid has perforated. At this point, I suggest taking it to a LR dealer and get them to pull all the engine codes. If all OK, next step is injectors. It's a common rail diesel and removal is a bit tricky, but if you pull them out, you will often be able to see a single injector with all the carbon deposits around it. If all injectors look the same, suggest that at this point you need to take them to a diesel specialist for testing and calibrating. This process usually cures 70% of diesel misfire problems. The other 30% really requires specialist knowledge of your vehicle's engine.

SOURCE: why wont my 1998 discovery td5 go past 4000 revs

If it's an automatic, then odds are the box will change before 4000rpm, though it does redline at 4800rpm. If you pop it in sport, you may push more out of the box before a change up.

SOURCE: landrover td5 54 plate gear problem local

Have you checked the oil recently? I'd suggest changing it fully rather than topping up, and checking for any signs of metal in the oil (the drain plug should be magnetic, but running the oil into a plastic tub then sticking a magnet in to the oil and waving that round should find any not on the plug. Lots of Metal = Bad.

2002 continental with 51.000 miles all of a sudden stopped pulling. Can put shifter in any gear in but won't engage. Also noticed fluid level is overfull all of sudden I did not add any.

Transmission will not go forward or backwards and if full of fluid. Possible bad shifter cable of shift collar or internal transmission problems. Look under car where the shifter cable is hooked to the transmission. Does it move when the lever is moved into the different gear locations?

2001 hyundai elantra goes in2 reverse but won't go backwards all other gears r perfect

Most automatic transmissions have a separate belt for reverse and all forward gears, The reverse belt is commonly lighter duty that the forward belt (some Chryslers were affected so much it was advised to not shift into reverse until the engine had warmed up and the automatic choke idled down) Thus your car would be in "reverse" but with no motion getting to the gears.

Can anyone tell me what this is. It is on a 2006 Chevy impala. It has something to do with shifting the car. Ithink it makes the box around my gear indicator work. I.E. P R [N] D 1 2

P=park gear position (no gear selected)
R=reverse gear position
N=neutral gear position (no gear selected)
D=top gear
2=fixed highest gear (used for speed when climbing an average incline and to control speed on decent)
1=fixed lowest gear (used for climbing steep incline or descending slowly)
Note-: Never engage Reverse gear when traveling forwards and never put into Park when moving forward or backwards, also towing most autos should be done no more than 10mph, fast towing can damage the gearbox, also make sure gear is in Neutral when towing.

Why does driver side power seat suddenly just move back and forth for only about a 1/4 of an inch?

These devices use motors with worm gears to provide the smooth operation and torque necessary to move the seat. The most common problem, other than the motors themselves failing (and since your does move somewhat, the motor is probably OK), the next biggest issue is something gets caught in the gear drive. Get a good look under the seat and see if there isn't something jamming the forward-backward motion of the seat.

I got a 1990 ford tempo I was wondering why it goes in reverse but won't go forward

Is it standard or automatic, I think it must be Standard because that doesn't happen with Automatics. If you put it in low and it only goes backwards someone had it (The transmission apart) and put the slider in back wards or something like that. Perhaps the forward gears are gone so they wanted to see if reverse works. Maybe you meant when you shift into a forward gear it doesn't work but when you shift it into reverse it does work. There is a fork like gear that moves the gears in and out of high and low range and it might be broken and it is possible if you find it hasn't been ground up in the internal gears it might be welded back in place and be sure to grind off every bit of flux so the gears can work smoothly. Best thing is to go to a junk yard that still has older cars like the Tempo so you can buy the transmission.

You will have to repost and reword this problem... you say it wont move, but that it loses power while driving. how is it losing power while driving if it wont move?

Transmission not move forward backward

Probably. There may be a solenoid not working which is keeping the transmission from engaging the forward gear train but for it not to work at all is unusual.

Transmission locked up - could not move in any gear, neutral only allows to roll backward not forward - what could it be? 200 land rover discovery with 182k miles

Is it a manual trans and when you say "could not move in any gear", does the engine stall when you try to move it? When it moves backward is that with the engine moving? If you answered yes to both questions then the trans is stuck in reverse. You may still be able to move the shifter but something has failed internally. If it has an automatic trans then you may have a simple linkage problem, or it may require a more in-depth inspection.

Error message that reads "gearbox fault"

It must be having automatic gears. It seems as if the gear teeth have got jammed up and the sensor automatically switched off the engine to prevent further damage. Also check quantity of the gear box. Anyway only a proper mechanic will be able to release the tangle, if any, but my sixth sense seems as if the parking sensor has malfunctioned therefore not releasing the safety feature of driving and thus not responding to the remote starter..........sodeep
