Check the "u" joints and check that the drive shaft flanges have been properly fitted to the pinion flange or that the "u"joints have been properly fitted into the pinion "ears " of the pinion.. Check that the correct grade of oil was used in the diff and it has the correct amount. New out of the factory diff should not be noisy but if you have a new rebuilt diff then it is possible that the gear mesh is not correct or used gears were used where the best mesh was obtained.

SOURCE: Symptoms of rear wheel bearing failure on a 1999?

It could be a bearing going out, depends on the noise, but I wouldn't start changing right away. You also have braking components back there. Identify which side it is coming from and eliminate the possibility of a brake issue before you begin the task of bearing replacement. Just makes good sense! Good Luck, I hope this is helpful!

I have a 66 mustang when i drive at 45 miles per hour, it makes a grinding noise and shakes. what can it be?

Could be a bad universal joint. I have a '65 Mustang, once when I installed the drive shaft, I put the rear u-joint into the axle slightly off-center. It would shake rather badly at about 45 MPH, but was mostly smooth above 50 or below 40. I thought it was a wheel balance problem, but it was just the driveshaft being slightly off-center.

Maybe check for loose u-joints, transmission mount, or carrier bearing if you have a two piece driveshaft.

Shifter shakes at 50 mph

It's most likely the drive shaft bearing which is in the center of the shaft mounted to the car. You can get a new one from Rapido and your problem could be solved. May want to consider looking at resolving the issue soon as the vibration will raise havoc with the drive train. A remote issue could be in the rear end itself whereby if someone drove the car most of it's life lugging the gears (standard transmission) the rear end gears tend to prematurely give out causing a similar condition. Best result is to simply find a new rear end at a salvage yard, just the center pod and replace. Good luck!
