The check engine light should not come on at all. If it does than you need to put it on a code checker, to find out the reason for the check engine light coming on. The light is known as the malfunction indicator light (MIL). When it comes on it indicates a malfunction in the system.

Thanks for your response. When the ignition switch is on, all the dashboard lights come on except the engine check light.

Usually I do one of two things to get it on. Reset the system by removing and replacing the battery pole to the terminal, or leaving the ignition switch on for a few minutes.

ell sounds like you have a bad ground or bad connection to the ecm. Check for green wires, bad engine to frame ground. Or perhaps this is something that a trained professional should check it out for you. The car should start with the M.I.L. light off or on and run in a closed loop operation. It is possible that the ignition switch itself is causing your problem.

Won`t start when cold

No such thing on your car.
The temp sensor tells the computer what the engine coolant temp is.
If it were faulty you would get a check engine light.
I would have the fuel pressure checked before and after you crank the engine. The pump relay provides power to the pump when you turn the key on to recover some of the lost fuel pressure after the car sits. The one way valve in the pump is supposed to prevent the pressure from dropping.
If the fuel pressure drops to zero it could take some time to crank the engine enough to get it back up.

2006 dodge stratus won't crank and cruise control won't light

Must not have been much of a mechanic. If the engine runs and sounds fine sometimes and other times it doesn't then it does not sound like a mechanical problem with the engine. Sounds more like a issue with either the ignition system or fuel system.

First thing to do is check the fluid level if that ok you may want to think about having the transmission filter and fluid changed, there are other possibilities but check these first
