hope that it isn't the head gasket (white smoke from oil or water ending up in cylinders?)-check water for bubling, and oil spending perhaps, could maybe be faulty lambda probe(exhaust)/air mass probe(intake) or broken exhaust/intake gasket causing wrong mixture(more fuel) - the car can spend much more fuel as normal, can also be the spark timing too late maybe.high pitch mechanical clanking at higher rpm can be heard from the valves - perhaps timing belt?. if it is some kind of electrical fail you are lucky :)
Please check whether you have a broken Matrix and leaks coolant as you said on Passenger's floorboard.If you have that means that you are having low level coolant and air is winning and cause bubbles. Check the matrix ( heater under dashboard.)
if its bubling open your coolant filer to the radiator and pour some water in there and wait for it to cool down for a couple of hours then open your radiator with a rag or something just to make sure and then add some water in your radiator and you should be just fine
remove the cap for the coolent bottle and let the car run for a bit you should get bubbling and a boiling sound comming from the bottle
worning: hot liquid dont stand too close while the bubling is going on wate till it stops then shut off the car
(keep a close eye on the temp gadge while the car is running after the air has bubbled out if thecoolent is low replace with the rite coolent
with any pontiac/chev vehicle its usually "DEX-COOL" its usually orange in color (dont put in the green stuff youll ruen your moter) if it calls for the other coolent (the green stuff) put that in and not the orange stuff
i hope this helps you i hope you get your car fixed
2004 Infiniti FX35 dash board may be mfg issue for Infiniti and you may look to them to solve the problem. I had the problem and they covered the dash part at 100%. I had to pay labor. Wound up at about $200. I had 84,000 miles on the car and outside warranty by over 15 months. Tells me they recognize an issue and will stand behind it. Be pleasant at dealer but insist they request support.

stuck thermostat. In my country, some mechanics even remove entirely the thermostat (not applicable on cold weather);
faulty water pump;
too soft radiator hoses (upper and lower);
faulty/slow radiator fan. Again, in my country, some
mechanics hard wire the radiator fan to be always on when the engine is
running. In some cases, it could be the fan clutch.
This is of
course assuming that nothing is internally wrong with the engine, the
coolant level is as required and that there are no leaks, air bubbles
and the belt driving the water pump is mechanically sound. In most vehicles, the radiator fan will not work if the A/C or heater is not working.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
