the connections near the front axle that activate the motor to engage the system aren't melted? That's a comon problem for that body style. If there good, sounds like it could be that motor itself. To figure out if it's you motor or transfercase, jack up the rear end, have a friend inside shift into 4 wheel drive, or try to, and put it in gear and apply some gas. If the front driveshaft is turning then it's something with the front end. If not, farther back in the system.

Check to see if the power steering pump is still turning. If you have a broken drive belt (serpentine belt or "fan" belt), and the pump doesn't turn, you have no power assist. If the pump is still turning, check the fluid level in the reservoir.

lol I shouldnt laugh at you but its funny to me because my Girlfriend just did this same exact thing with her Envoy lol well i helped her a little bit. well what it did to the envoy was since it was spinning in circles for so long at a good speed it actually got air in the power steering system and the system had to be bled of the air. the reason the air got in was because of t g-force on the fluid. the fluid actually got a way from the pump and the rack. lol just get your steering system bled. and it should be fine. Ps i am not aloud to drive the envoy anymore.
hope this helps you out. because it threw me for a loop also when it happened

is it the right key for that car? cause if not then that is the problem... if it is the right key, then you might have to replace the key cylinder cause you may have something broken in it...
