Remove the plug on the gearbox switch, short the 2 points out on the plug - not on the switch - and check if the lights work. If they work the switch might be faulty - test the switch with a multimeter, replace if necessary - or the alignment (inside the transmission) of the shaft in relation to the switch has gone haywire. In this case a tranny shop will have to have a look.

Did you check the bulbs into taillamps and fuses? If they are O.K. check brake light switch, located on the top of brake pedal with two wires connector.Disconnect the plug and short with wire.Check brake lights at the back.If O.K. check the switch. Some models use self adjusting switch.Just pull out the front part of the switch and put him back.

2000 Jetta no rear lights!

If possible get a test light. Clip one end to a ground and the other end to the light socket. Have someone turn on the lights. If you get the test light to come one then replace the bulb with a new one anyway. Your getting power to the housing. If not, then do the same test at the fuse block and make sure that your getting power there. If your not getting power there then check the main fuse. This will help diagnose the problem. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Blown fuse?

you have a failed door latch . you will have to remove door panel and window regulator to get to the latch. you can check this by closing all doors then open one by one when you open one see if you dome lights come on if they do that latch is ok. common issue. water gets into the electrical portion and kills it. most likely just drivers door it is opened the most. 1-2 hours at a shop and problem should be gone.
