2005 Hyundai Accent won't start

I have a 2005 Hyundai Accent with approx. 134,000 miles on it. I stopped at a stop sign and the car just cut off. I tried to restart it but it won't start. It does turn over and it makes this whiny noise when I try to start it. We checked the simple stuff, like fuses, the spark plugs, and when you try to start it, it does sound like the fuel pump kicks in. Any advice on what this is?? My husband thinks it may be the timing belt. How do you check the timing belt to see if it is it?? Does this car have a fuel shut off switch? I had another car and that's all it was but I can't find one on this car. I don't even know if it has one. Also, one last question, how do you check for a spark from the spark plugs?? We just checked to make sure the caps were on the spark plugs. Any advice and help on these questions would be so greatly appreciated!!! Thank you so much!!
April.

If so, where is it at?? Thank you so much about the spark plugs. I won't get shocked will I??? I don't know anything about cars. Excuse my ignorance. Do you have any ideas of what the problem could be???? Thanks again!!

If it is the timing belt you should here misfire and this is how you check for spark, remove a lead from a plug at reach distance unloosen plug with a spark plug socket put plug into the lead you removed and hold close to something metal while someone turns the key and you should see a spark come out and hit the metal, if not try replacing the rotor button and coil.

No you wont get a shock just hold the lead not the plug itself and to answer your other question it does have a cut off switch and its located on the side of the left front suspension inside the engine bay and press button on top of the switch to reset it and the car should work if that is the issue. Hope this help and thanks for using fixya :)

Its located at the front of the engine and it should have a black plastic cover over it so just remove the screws but i remember on a 2000 accent the timing is controlled by the ECU and you need a computer to do the timing for you so take it to a mechanics so they can use a computer on it.

After driving at 35 to 45 per mile for 15 to 20 miles the car hesitating, jerking and stop it will start again by permiting it to sit a few minutes

Sounds like a gas tank full of crud. Check gas filter to see if it is dirty. Also water in gas will clog gas tank filter then when car stops water will disburse and collect when engine starts again.

Temp gauge says cat is overheating, but it's not hot and doesn't smell like antifreeze

By cat I assume you realize this is a warning for an overheating catalytic converter not the engine, the Cat is locate in the exhaust system and can cause a fire.

could be the engine temp switch , have the OBD codes read this should tell you what ,if any where the fault is

2005 Hyundai accent won't start. it turns over but is not starting.

You'll have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem.
Check and see if you are getting spark to the plugs first.
Also re-check the computer for codes and see how many are back.
Trouble codes are suggestions, not solid instructions.

Slow acceleration and jerking when put in drive or reverse

Just wondering if you had checked your trans fluid?
If it's at the right level I might go back to the place that did the tranny work and have a chat with them,
If your fluid is low you have to get it at the dealer, I think it is call sp5, I'll go check the bottle I have.
