Audi won't shift out of first gear

1993 Audi 100 cs quattro, v6, AT will not shift out of first gear. All the dash shift indicator lights are on even before the engine is started. Can shift from park, neutral and through all gears, but the car stays in first gear no matter which drive gear is selected or what the vehicle speed is.

Help appreciated!

    I disconnected the battery cable and left it off for 10 minutes. It seems to have reset the transmission control module and the problem hasn't returned. Thanks for the input.

    my cars has been doing that same thing for months and you provided the information to get it moveing again

There is a procedure for resetting the transmission computer, but I haven't been able to locate it online as of yet..... still looking....

    disconnecting the battery will reset the transmission computer..... check ALL your fuses while battery is not connected.... blown fuses cause big trouble in these cars

There's should be a shift interlock that prevents it from being put into gear unless the brakes are on; check if the fuse it good for the brake lights; it seems to somehow be tied in with the parking lights, which may be feeding into the brake light circuit.

It could be something minor like a broken linkage, or something serious like, you need a tranny rebuild. You'll need a reputable shop to troubleshoot.
