1998 grand am - began having trouble a couple of days ago with the steering - checked the power steering fluid and its okay - how do you tell if its the rack and steering and/or the pump?

You will notice the rack and pinion if it is the trouble because when you steer the steering wheel the end play is very big because the specifide end of a steering wheel is only 25mm (+)or (-) 5mm.

then if the end play of the steering wheel go on the rack end pinion and look for other guy who can steer the steering wheel
so you can see the movement of the rack end pinion, one thing once the rack end pinion has a oil leakage i'm sure that the trouble was at that point but if no of what i have mentioned may be the trouble goes to the oil pump, but you can notice if the problem is on the steering pump it will create a noice ,hard to steer and you can see the oil will have a bubbles

Hello My 1996 discoverys steering is very very stiff especially when turning right. This problem dissappears soon after the vehicle starts to move. The problem started two days ago. steering fluid level...

hi.
if the fluid level is ok, then there is probably not a leak in the system.
check the tyre pressures are correct as underinflated tyres can make the steering heavy, as well as increasing tyre wear.
if the tyre pressures and fluid levels are ok then check the belt driving the power steering pump is ok.
other problems include a bad power steering pump. a faulty rack, or siezed joints on the struts.

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee leaking coolant and power steering fluid

Just a heads up, $10 bucks will buy you a seal kit for the P.S. pump. I topped mine off for a couple months, then the oring on the high pressure line (from pump, front center) blew and dumped the reservoir in a matter of miles.

The line can be a stinker to get off, recommend driving the car for a few minutes to heat up the pump a little. Don't forget the 20MM wrench.
