A scan for trouble codes may point you in the right direction quickly, rather than hit & miss, with replacing parts. Some of the autoparts stores will scan for free, and your right where you need to be to get the right part at the same time.

you have a single injector under the intake plenum it has 6 branching fuel leads off of this.A very common problem is the regulator attached to this and it leak off fuel which falls into the intake .causing this problem. it needs to be replaced .i have done at least 80 of these in my career.this will fix your problem.thanks for choosing fix ya

sounds like your egr valve is gummed up or bad. this is located behind the throttle body and has a single vaccum tube connected to it. if the diafram is still good you can remove it and clean it with WD 40 until the plunger works smooth

Black smoke and a strong smell of gasoline

It would help to know what you are working on, but assuming it have fuel injection, to have such a major rich condition means the fuel regulator may have failed or several injectors are leaking. Could also be bad coolant temp sensor or bad coil on multi-coil engine.

Check for compression on your cylinders. That would tell you if you have a bad head gasket or a bad head.check your distributer and see if is good, i seen that happend too

1989 Ford F150 runs fine then starts smoking black smoke and quits. After 20 minutes will restart and go again.

You have an excess fuel delivery problem. Black smoke indicates that too much fuel is entering the combustion chamber. If this vehicle has a carburator, check the float bowl level. If it is injected the main things to look for would be a stuck throttle position sensor or an injector that is not closing

2005 chevy silverado v8, some hesitation, rough idling, ses light on and sometimes flashes. black smoke when reving the engine.

Black smoke could mean it is running rich, have a scan done, it is probably an engine misfire code and it will tell you which cylinder is misfiring. the last digit is the cylinder, unless it says random missfire, It may be time for a good tune up and don't forget the fuel injection system, Clean out the intake and do an induction cleaning on the injectors.
