Remove the cam cover, remove the spark plugs, turn the engine to number 1 TDC, put a pencil in spark plug hole number one and twist the crank back and forth and make doubly sure you are at TDC. Now loosen the four bolts at the front of each cam sprocket, check TDC again with the pencil and rocking the crank, now take the pencil and lay it across the flats at the back of each cam. Twist the cams very carefully so that the pencil sits flat on each cam square. Snug up the sprocket bolts and use the pencil to check TDC again! Now check the cams again. Repeat the procedure until you have the cams flat and the engine at TDC.

your cams have a what looks like a square on them . find it and face them with the dimples on them up. then use a flat edged ruler to make sur you have them right. then turn no.1 cylinder top dead center. then take and put your chain on your exhaust sprocket and point the dimple up do the same with the intake. tighten down the torx bolts and recheck! it took me 3 times but its better than the $300+ tools and car runs great. if need be look up some of the e36 groups on line.

That light is telling you to have transmission serviced. not sure if it is the fluid or sensors. that is what a scan tool is for.

t Torque wrench (5...50 Nm) -V.A.G 1331-
Procedure
- Remove valve timing housing > Chapter.
- To turn crankshaft, reinstall bearing bush, crankshaft pulley -2- and crankshaft bolt -3- and securely tighten crankshaft bolt (use counterhold 3415).
- Remove spark plug from No. 1 cylinder. Use puller -T10094 A- and spark plug wrench 3122 B.
- Screw dial gauge adapter -T10170- into spark plug hole to stop.
- Screw dial gauge -VAS 6079- and extension -T10170/1- in to stop and lock in position with lock nut -arrow-.
- Turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation, to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Note position of small needle on dial gauge.
- Then turn crankshaft back 45° opposite direction of engine rotation.
- Press tensioning guide rail -1- in direction of arrow and lock piston with locking pin -T40011-.
- Mark direction of rotation of timing chain -3- using felt-tip marker.
- Remove bolts -2- and remove camshaft sprocket -1- with timing chain -3-. Counterhold using counterhold tool -T10172-.
- Renew bolts -2-. Tighten bolt -2- to 50 Nm (use counterhold -T10172-).
- Turn inlet and exhaust camshafts until camshaft clamp -T10171- can be pushed into holes in camshaft to stop.
Locking pins -arrows 1- must engage in holes -arrows 2-. Inscription "TOP"-arrow 3- must be readable from above.
Note
Camshafts must not be pushed axially whilst turning.
- Install a M6 bolt -arrow- hand-tight (do not tighten) to secure camshaft clamp -T10171-.
- Remove camshaft sprocket bolts. It is absolutely necessary to use counterhold tool -T10172- for this.
Note
Camshaft clamp -T10171- must not be used as a counterhold tool.
- Remove one camshaft sprocket.
- Place timing chain over camshaft sprockets, observing chain direction of rotation, and install camshaft sprocket again.
- Tighten camshaft bolts until camshaft sprockets can still just be turned on camshafts.
- Tension timing chain by removing locking pin -T40011-.
- Turn crankshaft in engine direction of rotation to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Permissible deviation from TDC No. 1 cylinder: ±0.01 mm.
Note
If crankshaft is turned more than 0.01 mm past TDC, then turn crankshaft back 45° against engine direction of rotation. Then turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation to TDC No. 1 cylinder.
- Hold camshaft sprockets -1- and -4- in this position with counterhold -T10172- then tighten bolts -2- to 50 Nm.
Note
Crankshaft must not move and timing chain -3- must remain tensioned on both sides when tightening camshaft bolts.
- Remove camshaft clamp -T10171-.
- Turn crankshaft two rotations in direction of engine rotation to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Permissible deviation from TDC No. 1 cylinder: ±0.01 mm.
- Insert camshaft clamp -T10171- to stop in camshaft openings.
If camshaft clamp -T10171- cannot be fitted
- Repeat adjustment.
If camshaft clamp -T10171- can be fitted
- Remove camshaft clamp -T10171-, hold camshaft sprockets with counterhold tool -T10172- and tighten bolts -2- a 1/4 turn (90°) further with a rigid wrench.
Note
Camshaft sprockets must not move on camshaft whilst tightening.
- Turn crankshaft two rotations again, in engine direction of rotation, to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Permissible deviation from TDC No. 1 cylinder: ±0.01 mm.
- Insert camshaft clamp -T10171- to stop in camshaft openings.
If camshaft clamp -T10171- cannot be fitted
- Repeat adjustment.
Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling procedure. In the process, note the following:
t Installing valve timing housing > Chapter.
t Installing poly V-belt > Chapter.
t Renew oil seals for camshaft sealing cover and oil them before fitting.

Bmw m42 engine to fit a camshaft sprocket to a camshaft


The M42 and M46 engines have the twin vanos pulleys and require locking tools to lock the crank and cam shafts inot the correct position. There are no timing marks on these as they are floating pulleys- ie they have no key locating the pulley in a specific position on the cam. Unless you make accurate marks during stripping there is very little chance you will be able to get the cam timing right on this engine without the cam locking tool kit.

You must use a special tool which bolts onto the cylinder head. It is designed to hold the camshafts in the proper position. It goes over the flats on the camshafts to hold the camshafts in the correct position. This tool can be rented. Look on EBay or check with your local Snap On Tools, Mac Tools, or Matco Tools dealers to rent one. See the link below for photos of properly aligned timing marks for your engine.

Where are timing marks for diahatsu rocky 1985 4x4 3y motor


The 3Y is a Toyota engine used in the Rocky/Rugger.
Setting up valve timing you need to set the no.1 cylinder on TDC on the compression stroke.
Turn the crank until the piston is at the topmost point of its travel. Determine this by inserting a plastic or wood dowel in the plug hole and watching it travel upward. Be careful that it does not snag.
At TDC the mark(see red arrow on diagram) on the crank sprocket will be at the lowest point(If the sprocket has been removed the set key -see blue arrow- will be at the topmost point)
Turn the camshaft so that the set key is at the topmost point and aligns with the mark on the engine. If the sprocket has not been removed, remove it now.
On the timing chain you will find 2 links that are lighter in color than the others. These 2 links have to be aligned with the marks on the sprockets before refitting the sprockets to the shafts.

How to put timimg belt and align back on for a 92 geo tracker


Here are instructions from autozone.com: Please be sure the belt is tight on the right side with the gears aligned before releasing tensioner onto belt.

To install:

  1. If necessary, install the timing belt inside cover.
  2. Slide the timing belt guide on the crankshaft so that the concave side faces the oil pump, then install the sprocket key in the groove in the crankshaft.
  3. Slide the pulley onto the crankshaft, and install the center retaining bolt. Tighten the center bolt to 48-54 ft. lbs. (65-75 Nm) for 1986-88 1.3L engines, to 76-83 ft. lbs. (105-115 Nm) for 1989-95 1.3L engines, or to 58-65 ft. lbs. (80-90 Nm) for 1.6L engines. To hold the crankshaft from turning, you can use Suzuki Tool 09927-56010 (or equivalent), or a large prybar inserted in the transmission housing slot and the flywheel teeth.
  4. Install the timing belt camshaft sprocket, ensuring that the slot in the sprocket engages the camshaft (pulley) pin; this ensures that the sprocket is properly positioned on the end of the camshaft. Secure the camshaft with the metal rod used during removal, then tighten the sprocket bolt to 41-46 ft. lbs. (56-64 Nm).
  5. Assemble the timing belt tensioner plate and the tensioner, making sure that the lug of the tensioner plate engages the tensioner.

  1. Install the timing belt tensioner, tensioner plate and spring on the engine. Tighten the mounting bolt and stud only finger-tight at this time. Ensure that when the tensioner is moved in a counterclockwise direction, the tensioner moves in the same direction. If the tensioner does not move, remove it and the tensioner plate to reassemble them properly.
  2. Loosen all rocker arm valve lash locknuts and adjusting screws. This will permit movement of the camshaft without any rocker arm associated drag, which is essential for proper timing belt tensioning. If the camshaft does not rotate freely (free of rocker arm drag), the belt will not be properly tensioned.
  3. Rotate the camshaft sprocket clockwise until the timing mark on the sprocket and the V mark on the timing belt inside cover are aligned.
  4. Using a 17mm wrench, or socket and breaker bar, on the crankshaft sprocket center bolt, turn the crankshaft clockwise until the punch mark on the sprocket is aligned with the arrow mark on the oil pump.

With the camshaft and crankshaft marks properly aligned, push the tensioner up with your finger and install the timing belt on the two sprockets, ensuring that the drive side of the belt is free of all slack. Release your finger from the tensioner. Be sure to install the timing belt so that the directional arrow is pointing in the appropriate direction.

In this position, the No. 4 cylinder is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke.
  1. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise two full revolutions, then tighten the tensioner stud to 18-21 ft. lbs. (24-30 Nm) for 1986-88 models, or to 80-106 inch lbs. (9-12 Nm) for 1989-95 models. Then, tighten the tensioner bolt to 18-21 ft. lbs. (24-30 Nm).
  2. Ensure that all four timing marks are still aligned as before; if they are not, remove the timing belt, and install and tension it again.
  3. Install the timing belt cover and all related components.

Timing chain


Each gear has an arrow and a dot. The chain should have two differently colored links. Position the crankshaft sprocket so the arrow is pointed up with the dot to your right. Position the camshaft sprocket with the arrow pointed straight down at the crankshaft sprocket and it's dot should also be to the right. The colored links on the chain should be lined up with the dots.

Tune-up Specifications
Air/Fuel Ratio 0.7% Air/Fuel Ratio-Limits[1] 0.3 - 1.1% Timing[2] 6°+/- 1°BTDC Timing Advance[3] 30°+/- 3°BTDC Idle RPM[4] 800 +/- 50 [1] Check CO with the oxygen sensor connected. [2] AT 2300 RPM, and coolant temperature sensor disconnected. [3] Normal operating temperature, with coolant temp. sensor connected, at 2300 RPM. Add initial timing. [4] A/C off.
Timing mark is on flywheel, access hole is on top of bellhousing. Remove access plug with 27mm wrench if necessary
Firing Order is > 1342 Clockwise Rotation & #1 Plug Wire is at 2 Oclock on Distribitor Cap


Align the mark (can be a dot or notch) on the intermediate shaft sprocket with the notch in the crank pulley. Align the mark (can be a dot or notch) on the "Back" of camshaft sprocket with the top edge of the valve cover gasket. Be sure all the timing marks are properly aligned.

NOTE : The 8 valve engine requires a special wrench, Volkswagen No. US4493 or equivalent, to adjust the camshaft drive belt tensioner. Whenever the drive belt is removed and refitted, the camshaft and intermediate shaft timing MUST be adjusted. The drive belt can be replaced without removing the belt sprockets.
  1. Loosen alternator adjusting bolts and remove the fan belt.
  2. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the pulley.
  3. Remove the upper timing cover bolts and remove the cover.
  4. Remove the timing belt guide, if equipped.
  5. Turn the engine by hand to set the No. 1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) and remove the crankshaft pulley.
  6. Remove bolt and nuts securing the lower timing cover and remove the cover. CAUTION: Turning the camshaft or crankshaft with the timing belt removed may cause damage to pistons and/or valves.
  7. Loosen timing belt tensioner locknut, release belt tension and remove belt from sprockets.
  8. Inspect belt for visible damage such as missing teeth or exposed threads. Inspect tensioner bearing for smooth running. Any damaged components should be replaced.
NOTE : On high mileage engines, failure of the tensioner bearing is a possibility. Consider replacing the bearing when replacing the timing belt.
  1. Align the mark (can be a dot or notch) on the intermediate shaft sprocket with the notch in the crank pulley. Align the mark (can be a dot or notch) on the "Back" of camshaft sprocket with the top edge of the valve cover gasket. Be sure all the timing marks are properly aligned.
  2. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft. Fit the timing belt starting with the crankshaft and intermediate shaft sprockets. Fit the belt so that it is as tight as possible between the crankshaft and the intermediate shaft sprockets and between the intermediate shaft and camshaft sprockets.
    1. Turn the belt tensioner clockwise to adjust the tension. The direction is important to avoid contact with the timing cover. Check the tension by twisting the belt as shown. You should be able to twist it no more than 90 degrees.
    2. Tighten the tensioner locknut to: 33 ft lbs (45 Nm)
    3. Rotate the crankshaft two revolutions and recheck the belt tension and the timing marks for proper alignment.
    NOTE: Very slight movement of sprockets and marks can be expected as belt tension is adjusted. Slight movement is OK. The smallest possible increment of adjustment is one whole tooth of the belt or sprocket.
    1. Remove the crankshaft pulley and refit the lower timing cover. Tighten the bolts to: 87 in lbs (10 Nm)
    2. Refit crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolts to: 15 ft lbs (20 Nm)
    3. Refit timing belt guide, if equipped.
    4. Refit upper timing cover and tighten bolt and nuts to: 87 in lbs (10 Nm)
    5. Refit water pump pulley and tighten the bolts to: 15 ft lbs (20 Nm)
    6. Refit fan belt and adjust tension. Tighten alternator adjusting bolts.

How do i tension the cam belt on my e36 318i bmw?


to do it correctly you need a tension gauge, however it is possible without. make sure your timing marks are correct,flywheel locked and camshaft locking tool in place. slacken camshaft sprocket bolt and turn clockwise to stop. fit timing belt in an anticlockwise direction starting at the crankshaft, ensure belt is taught on the non tensioned side between sprockets. turn tensioner pully anticlockwise, untill you can turn belt 90 degrees with finger and thumb pressure. tighten tensioner. tighten camshaft sproket bolt to 63nm. Remove all locking tools. turn engine 2 revolutions from the crankshaft pulley by hand. DO NOT START AT THIS STAGE!!!!!!!! refit all locking tools, if at any stage the engine locks or the tools will not refit, you have done something wrong. Go back to stage one. Check belt tension finger and thumb method, retension as required. turn again by hand. re fit all components and start. If you have whining noises the tension is too tight. Flapping or banging noises too loose. This is not a fool proof method and you have to be aware of the failings of fitting timing belts without the correct tools etc. ENGINE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR IF FITTED INCORRECTLY. A good garage should charge no more than 2.5 hours for this work to be carried out, with a warranty. Hope this helps
