You cant upgrade to HID lights on your car without the proper wiring right? Same with anything electrical in a vehicle if your vehicle didn't have all these extra buttons then your controlling unit for these devices are not compatible and not gonna work. Different units/different functions. You need to have the proper wiring harness for that wheel and the brain that operated all those buttons. Your airbag isn't recognized that's why you have the light on!!!

Always worked then they just quit. What would cause my radio controls and cruise control to stop on my steering wheel???

Failure can be caused by electrical contacts in the column. A 2004 is quite old (18 years) so this is not surprising.

I had a car (not a pontiac) where the entire dashboard suddenly went out one day. There was what was called a "clockspring" that fits between the steering wheel and column, it broke and along with it the entire control panel.

There are a host of wires and electrical parts inside most steering wheels. Here is the bad news, you probably can't fix it yourself, if the steering wheel needs removed because of the airbag. Another alternative is you may have blown a fuse. Find your owners manual, and locate the fuse that goes to these components and see if it's still good. Many radios also have in-line fuses (especially after market) which means pulling the radio out and checking that fuse, but if they both went out at the same time, there is probably a common problem.

Steering wheel controls for Cruise Control and radio are not working. What can cause this

There is a "Clock Spring" under the steering wheel, this is a ribbon wire set that wraps around the column about 30 times or so, The purpose is to allow the steering wheel to turn without twisting off the wires. Eventually, this wire breaks....

Whenever I had my cruise control on, the engine would just quit. We stopped using cruise as we were on a trip. When we did a test run with the cruise on again, smoke and electrical smell started rolling...

It sounds like you have a serious electrical problem in your steering column. It is probably a bad switch for he cruise control or set of speed, but could also just be a bare wire touching the metal steering column.

The stalling COULD be that your cruise control is partially engaged.

The cruise control in my 2005 Ford Freestar just stopped working yesterday, then this afternoon the radio controls in the steering column stopped working as well

clock spring in the steering column is my guess. They are delicate and have to do with anything in the steering wheel like airbag, horn, or anything that is operated by buttons on the wheel. These wires have to turn constantly with the steering wheel and the "clock spring" goes bad often enough

Cruise control and horn stopped working

You need a new clockspring. It is behind the steering wheel, at the top of the steering column. It has wires wound around it like a clock. You will need to disconnect the battery, remove the air bag, then the steering wheel, and the steering column trim. Unbolt it, and install in reverse order.

Cruise control, and radio controls on steering wheel, now air bag

The problem is the coiled ribbon contact under the steering wheel (we call it the clock-spring contact) that connects the stereing wheel controls to the steering column wiring harness, this is a printed circuit that is coiled to allow the wheel to move and still have a psychical contact for the wheel switch's and the airbag, anyway replace that contact coil, u must disarm the airbag to do this repair, follow the factory procedure to do this or serious injury can result if the airbag fires.
