If you are replacing the water pump, it is also a good time to replace the thermostat, so do that as well.

    Turn off the engine, and leave it to cool. Open the hood, and use a wrench to loosen the clamp bolt from the negative battery terminal and remove the cable from the terminal and cover with a cloth to keep it from coming in contact with the terminal.

    Place a drain pan underneath the radiator drain cock.. Once the pan is in place, unscrew the drain cock from the radiator until you have a good stream. Remove the top radiator cap. Drain the coolant from the radiator in to the pan. Once the radiator has been emptied,screw the drain cock back in fully and put the drain pan in a safe area.

  • Loosen the bolt that attaches the clamp to the lower radiator hose. Remove the clamp from the radiator hose. Disconnect the hose from the water pump. Inspect all hoses at this time and replace if there are any bulges, rips, tears, holes, Locate the injection pump pulley. Remove the bolts from the pulley, and lift it from the vehicle.

    Locate the water pump, and remove the seven mounting bolts. Remove the two injection pump holding nuts. Remove the water pump and its gasket from the vehicle. Clean the engine mounting surface of all old gasket material and grease/dirt. (And any old sealant if present) Use a platic putty knife to scrape if it is really stuck. DO NOT USE METAL!

    Fix the new water pump gasket to the water pump. Place the water pump in the same position from which you removed the old one. Fix the water pump in place by attaching the mounting bolts. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE BOLTS! Approx. 20-25ft. lbs of torque is sufficient. Reinstall the injection pump pulley by attaching it to the engine with the mounting bolts. Attach the lower radiator hose to the new water pump. Place the clamp around the hose, and tighten the bolt to fix the clamp in place.

    Open the radiator cap, and pour coolant back into the radiator.You can use the old coolant if it is younger than 10K niles and free of any contaminants. Close the radiator cap. Refill your coolant reservoir to the COLD mark if needed. Reattach the battery cable to the negative battery terminal, and fix it in place by tightening the bolt against it. Turn on the engine to check that the water pump now works correctly and is not leaking. If there any leaks, tighten the bolts 1/8 of a turn each..Check again for leaks. Let the engine warm up to operating temperature. Check for leaks. Squeeze the top radiator hose closed several times.. You should feel moderate resistance and the surge of fluid through the hose when released. Refill your coolant reservoir to the HOT mark. Check for leaks again. Done..
