This I think would be either of two things, it could be your fuel filter or your fuel pump, hope this helps

Change the IAC the idle air control. You may be able to clean it and put it back on.

With a good air filter, and a good fuel filter you shouldn't really have any problems since the fuel pump is good. You could have a vacuum leak, this can be identified by using a can of carb. cleaner with the tube attached so that you can spray near & around your vacuum hoses & connections. If you spray near a leaking hose, or a cap, or connection that is leaking, the engine will slow or stall. Only spray a second or two & allow the engine compartment to air out between spraying as it is a flamable product.

Short of that, you could be looking at ta idle speed control motor/throttle position sensor.

Testing the vehicle with a vacuum gauge could assist in identifying any other issues such as exhaust or valves. Gauges usually come with instructions & just need to be hooked to an available intake port.

good luck.

1989 Cutlass Ciera 3.3l Stalls, will not idle

if dies immediately when u put it in drive then whats happening is the torque convertor on transmission is lock and need to unplug the electric connector on the transmission cause that's all it controls, if dies in park u most likely its Idle air control valve on your throttle body, if it does it when fully warm ur injectors cause that .... just try to clean idle air control valve first and unplug transmission connector first u should be running better

I have a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera with the 2.5L Iron Duke engine. It sputters when I rev it up just a little and sometimes it idles up and down. The only way I know to stop it idling up and down is to...

Your problem might have it's root in electronic sensors but historically a fluctuating idle is associated with fairly tangible things - intake air leaks and/or inefficient fuelling - worn or dirty carburettor, bad injector spray patterns, worn throttle shaft and suchlike...

A splutter on sudden acceleration can have similar causes or be rooted in worn or wrongly gapped spark plugs or simply not enough spark power.
It is true the three items you mention are associated with fuelling but I am against replacing stuff unless it is known to need replacing and before looking for electronic cures it is important to go back to basics and check the engine condition and any adjustments or replacements needed.

If the injector spray patterns are bad or if the intake valve seats are imperfect or the fuel pressure regulator isn't working the exhaust gas will be giving the wrong story to the oxygen sensor which in turn will be sending the wrong signals to the management computer. The computer in it's turn tries to weaken the air/fuel ratio when it should be doing the reverse or vice-versa. In most cases it pays to do the basics first...
