My ML320 2002 V6 won't start after stopping with the engine running very roughly. Strong smell of petrol and light blue smoke from the exhaust when tried to restart and seemed to be running on few cylinders. At third attempt to restart a strange 'clank' came from the bottom left side of the engine [or so it seemed] and the engine would not turn over at all although all dash warning lights were on and the battery is fine. I'm many miles from a Merc. dealer so any advice would be appreciated, Dean Williams

You have a throttle position sensor on your vehicle that needs proper voltage to work. First thing, get a good battery in it(one that cranks every time). This will keep the sensor from losing its memory. Then, with a new battery in, it will either smooth out or you will need to reset the tps yourself. Easy enough, just turn the key to position 2 for approx 2 minutes. Assuming everthing works properly, the sensor will learn its endstops on its own. If you stll are having issues, then have the dealer check it when they scan for codes. Also, the wrench flashing at you is the maintenance indicator, so you might want to have that done as well. Never hurts when you've just bought a vehicle.

The Symptoms tell me it is a head gasket. A leaky or bad head gasket would cause all of the problems that you mentioned.
Burning water causes White Smoke, Burning Oil causes Black Smoke. The oil and water are mixing with the gas in the cylinders and causing it to run bad. Pull out the dipstick and look at the oil on it. Does it look like good oil? Or does it look watery and or foamy or grey colored. Open up the radiator and look inside, do you see oil?
This seems almost text book to me... I would have someone local to you to have a look at it to be sure.

It could just be the fuel injection tips have black tar build up. But, this sounds like the typical, 1980's problem with people who used to put cheap gas in their mercedes. You get gunk buildup in your gas pump. When the car is hot, the gunk expands and you get no gas flow. First try about 4 applications of puting a bottle of good fuel injection cleaning fluids in only half tank gas and let it run almost dry. If you don't see a substantial change, don't even waste your time playing with it trying to clean anything, those are only agrivating band aids on a broken leg. Change the fuel pump! your car should be as good as new.

You can try disconnecting battery, but make sure to reset the computer on first restart by turning the wheel each way fully a couple of times.
Also another thing to consider is the Crankshaft position sensor, these start to fail but do not throw an engine computer code and after a while will not let the engine run.
