This is a tough one, formerly owned by someone on ****. I got it running and the Tranny barely worked in First and Reverse so I did a complete rebuild and found many things wrong. They had tried to rebuild it and forgot a few parts. I replaced all the missing parts and did the complete rebuild from a very good video. I am a mechanic but hate working on Automatics. I now have Reverse, OD slips badly, Third works well, second works well but First seems to be dragging. I was told that it could be the 3-4 Shift Valve in the Valve Body and I have pulled the Valve Body and checked every valve I can find and they all work great. Still same problem though.
Very commendable to expand your mechanical knowledge by taking on something you would normally steer clear of
how to fix is not the problem but what to fix
when a ratio slips that indicates insufficient pressure to apply the clutch or band--- problem servo/ solenoid for that section
dragging indicates that the pressure is not being release fully or trying to engage 2 ratios --again servo / solenoid problems
a small part installed the incorrect way around, a spring on the wrong side
bad wiring , faulty TCm
There are very good automatic repair manuals available that have photos of how and where parts are fitted that I would suggest to you as video , while good, will not have the full details to trouble shoot
what you lack now but will pick up very quickly are the little "tricks of the trade" and you can get them by talking to transmission repair shops , reading repair manuals and experience
don't give as it is repairable , just have patience

Are you sure the TV ( trans shift cable at the throttle valve) cable is correctly adjusted?? Without line pressure readings, I can only guess that the D3/Part throttle check ball is missing, if it is a trans problem
If the TV is correct, I am assuming that the TV cable is pulled tight at WOT.
Did you check the throttle (ACCEL) cable to be sure that the carb goes wide open when your accel pedal is on the floor?? This must be done with someone in the car and a second person looking at the carb. Without doing this, you do not know if you have WOT. Without WOT, the trans will not de-tent and shift down.

There are to many things that can cause this problem, best thing to is go get the ECM scanned for DTC codes at a transmission shop or Auto zone or Parts Source since they scan for free.
The ECM should have DTC code in it's memory on how the transmission is Performing and have the Transmission line tested for Fluid pressure.
Good luck and hope this helps. Oh and also ways check with more then on transmission shop if there tell you that you need a new Transmission,
It could be a simple as the transmission filter falling off causing the lost of transmission fluid pressure. Check the transmission fluid too.

Hi, I also had this same problem. My van is 92-93 3.1. There was a leaking problem and the pressure was not enough so I changed the gaskets and came out ok. Hope it helps. I am not technician, just a Lumina lover.
