Windshield wipers will not stop working

How do I turn my wipers off? They will come on by themselves and will not shut off until I turn the car off

  • Paul Schroeder Apr 23, 2014

It's either a bad relay, or the combination switch is shot. GOOD LUCK!

If you can get to the wiper motor board and wiring connections, blow everything out with low preasure air and spray the hell out of everything with CRC QD ELECTRONIC CLEANER. It's fast drying. repeat 2 or 3 times. (make sure there is no power to the motor)This trick has saved me hundreds of $ on many master control switches and LCM's. Contacts could have corrosion on them. It's worth a $10.00 try before hundreds in repairs. Otherwise it could be the multi function switch in the directional lever on the column. Spray that too and blow it out. Let me know how you make out

You may simply have a switch issue...especially if you try to shut it off, and that does not work...check that first...you can find that part at most auto salvage yards. ..good luck

SOURCE: windshield wipers won't turn off

All parts with the exception of the wiper switch are built into the wiper motor. Check with a Cadillac dealer for a cover kit that had the circuit board built in for your wiper motor

SOURCE: Wipers will not turn off...

Do you turn them on by throwing a lever or by turning a dial?
It seems that the switch that controls the wipers may be stuck open.. (metal contacts not seperating)

Wipers work about 5 seconds then stop until engine is shut off about an hour. Then repeat.

Sounds like the windshield wiper motor is getting too hot. The wait an hour is waiting for that to cool down.
The wiper motor is located usually under the hood, on the firewall on the passenger side.
You should be able to feel the wiper motor getting too hot when the wipers are turned on.
Hope this helps.

Windshield Wipers come on by themselves on 93 Cavalier

I would look for a short in the wiring in the column, or a problem with the switch itself.

I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero. I have had a issue with my headlights, windshield wipers, and horn. It's starts out with the wiper blades going off by themselves. If I shut off the headlights, they turn...

Could be a relay, but i advise you to take the car to an electrical shop to check the all system by the squematic delectrical diagram. Is has to be a short in some circuit. sammyc47

Windshield wipers turn on by themselves for 2 or 3 swipes and turn off by themselves

These are "rain sensing" wipers and will occasionally do this based on the sensitivity setting and the amount of light outside. Most of the time the system works fairly well, I sometimes leave the wipers off if it's dry out.

Need to get a programmer dont know where its at

Windshield Wiper System The windshield wiper system consists of :
  • Windshield wiper motor (17508) (F-type).
  • Washer system.
  • Windshield wiper control module.
  • Turn signal and windshield wiper switch (13K359).
The windshield wiper control module is:
  • Located at the instrument panel fuse panel.
The windshield wiper motor is:
  • Attached to the cowl top extension (021A36) .
  • Connected to windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft (17566) .
The turn signal and windshield wiper switch features a:
  • Rotary wiper switch.
  • Push type washer actuator.
OFF/Low/High Speed
  • Has a two-speed, permanent magnet, three brush electric windshield wiper motor .
  • The windshield wiper motor has a brush rigging that permits selection of low or high speed.
  • When the turn signal and windshield wiper switch is in the LO position, the common brush and the blue/orange wire brush are used, and the windshield wiper motor operates at low speed.
  • When the turn signal and windshield wiper switch is in the HI position, the common brush and the white wire brush are used.
  • In HI position, electric current will bypass a portion of the armature winding causing the windshield wiper motor to operate faster.
  • When the turn signal and windshield wiper switch is moved to the OFF position, the windshield wiper motor will continue at low speed until the park switch outer contacts open.
  • When the park switch contacts open, the windshield wiper motor stops in the park position.
Interval
When the turn signal and windshield wiper switch is in the interval position:
  • The wipers make single wipes separated by pauses.
  • The rotary switch is on the end of turn signal and windshield wiper switch .
  • The length of the pause can be set from approximately 1 to 17 seconds.
  • Length of pause decreases as the rotary switch is rotated away from off.
  • Length of pause increases as the rotary switch is rotated toward off.
While in the interval wiper mode:
  • It is normal to hear a slight click at the beginning of each on/pause cycle. NOTE: When using interval wipers, the first wipe may not occur until after a pause of up to 17 seconds.

Windshield wipers intermittent on 2002 Windstar

2002 Windstar wipers would come on by themselves, or not work set on intermittent, driver door lock would not work sometimes, ABS and brake light would come on sometimes, the problem was in the park switch inside the wiper motor. I replaced with wrecking yard wiper motor $44.95 w/13 month warranty. no more problem. check how many pins on connector plug, mine had 5 on the wiper motor side.Take the wiper assembly off of the metal cowl, 2 nuts, & I bolt, it is easier to snap the actuator pieces off of the wiper motor that way. God Bless JMR
