If I move the shifter (automatic) back and forth through all the gears, it will sometimes start in neutral or park. Sometimes the car will start fine and other times I've had to go back and forth for a couple of minutes before I can finally get it to start. When it doesn't start, the car doesn't even try to turn over or make the clicking sound that a bad alternator or starter will do. The battery is new and the interior and dash lights all work when starting (trying) the car. I believe there is some kind of sensor somewhere that is not acknowledging that the car is in Park or Neutral and thinks it is in Drive or Reverse and won't let the car start in those gears. I am not sure of the auto transmission sensor, but you are absolutely right, there is shift selector that tells the on board computer the car is in neutral or park. any other position and it will not start. I would say it would be located on the transmission where the shift cable hooks to the transmission. I can't remember weather it is on the outside or in the trans itself. It would make sense for it to be on the outside.
