I have a 1990 Ford Taurus 3.0 V6 station wagon that has trouble starting.

If I move the shifter (automatic) back and forth through all the gears, it will sometimes start in neutral or park. Sometimes the car will start fine and other times I've had to go back and forth for a couple of minutes before I can finally get it to start. When it doesn't start, the car doesn't even try to turn over or make the clicking sound that a bad alternator or starter will do. The battery is new and the interior and dash lights all work when starting (trying) the car. I believe there is some kind of sensor somewhere that is not acknowledging that the car is in Park or Neutral and thinks it is in Drive or Reverse and won't let the car start in those gears. Thanks in advance for your help.

I am not sure of the auto transmission sensor, but you are absolutely right, there is shift selector that tells the on board computer the car is in neutral or park. any other position and it will not start. I would say it would be located on the transmission where the shift cable hooks to the transmission. I can't remember weather it is on the outside or in the trans itself. It would make sense for it to be on the outside.
I hope I was of some help.

WHAT CAUSES LOUD GRINDING SOUND WHEN TRYING TO CRANK MY 1990 FORD F150 WHEN IN PARK?

Check and make sure the bell housing on the transmission isn't broke and trying to separate from the engine. Shifter shouldn't move while cranking unless transmission itself is moving.

My 1998 Ford Taurus Stations Wagon. Transmission is stuck on Park. What do do?

is the car on in incline if so you may have to user some force to get it out, the other problem may be the linkage at trany but this is only if the shifter moves and car is in park, if the shifter doesnt move and theres no incline then make sure the brake lights work because when you step on the brake the shift lock releases the shifter and it gets power from the brake switch so if the light dont work theres no power to the shift lock to release, try these check first. hope this helps,

Trouble starting

Hi

It sounds as though you have a problem with the starter inhibitor switch on the transmssion.

Bridge the terminals on the inhibitor and then see if that solves the problem to start with, then if so, you need to either adjust the inhibitor or the gear shifter.

From the sounds of it though, there may be a cable adjustment possible on the gear shifter.
