SOURCE: 1988 Oldsmobile Regency 98 will idle but won't quits on the road

Mixture solenoid Quadrajet carburetor? I might start in that neighborhood if it has that carb. Quite cantankerous if not in freshly rebuilt and operating mode. Can cause more than mild symptoms. All your electrical connections and engine/body grounds in good shape? Trying to rule out ignition breakdown so you can focus on fuel delivery, which is my suspicion in this case. Let me know what you find. Thanks, TT

SOURCE: I have a 1990 Olds 98 with a charging problem. THe battery is good and the alt is new. It is not charging

You need to test your charging system circuits at the alternator. (see diagram and instructions)

BLK is the cable to the battery POSITIVE terminal - this is hot at all times.
PINK/BLACK comes from Fuse #5 (15 Amp) in the relay center under the right side of the instrument panel. This wire is hot (battery voltage) with the ignition switch in the RUN, BULB TEST, or START positions.
BROWN comes from your instrument panel and is protected by Fuse #16 (20 Amp) in the instrument panel left side fuse block. This wire will have slightly less than battery voltage with the ignition switch in the RUN, BULB TEST, or START positions.
If any of this is not as described, let me know what you have found and we can continue if needed.

I have a 1990 oldsmobile 98 and every day i have to get a boost to start it. what's the problem

it is the automatic load leveler that pumps air into the back shocks to level the car so it rides better when there are lots of people or weight in it. it is in the frontof the car opposite the battery, just disconnect it. had the same problem on my 1990 olds 98.

Every now and again engine will rev up and coolent senser error code also high battery charging at 20v ghecked with tester not overchargeing on a olds 98 1991

OK I think you have two unrelated issues here. The first is the coolant sensor. Either the sensor is broken or, just as likely, there is a problem with the wires going to and from it, either broken or the insulation has broken causing a short. When the coolant sensor malfunctions it can send a signal to engine control unit (ECU) that the coolant, and therefore the engine, is cold. The ECU responds by injecting more fuel to compensate for a 'cold' engine and this causes the engine to race. Fix the coolant sensor/wiring and the engine racing will also be cured. The charging voltage from the alternator is too high in my experience. It should be only be about 14.5 volts even when the battery is low. Most alternators have an integrated brushes and electronic module that can be unbolted and exchanged for a new one. Failing that, an alternator can be bought at a reasonable price on exchange for your old one. Some damage to other electrical systems my result of high voltage supply, my car actually has an over voltage protection relay and fuse to protect the ABS braking system and other circuits. A friendly consultation with an auto electrician now might save money on other things in future
