Loud knocking noise from engine

I have a 2000 dodge neon with 186k miles. 2.0. i have a top end knock and i cant figure out what it is. not sure if its the cam or what. nots not in the lower end. when started up cold it has a really loud knock. when it warms up it gets quieter but never goes away completely. i had it looked at by a mechanic he said it was just lifters and just to do a motor flush. i did just that and no change. ive tried additives and no change. not sure if anyone knows of a common problem of this in these junk cars and what it is. thanks

SOURCE: Cold Engine Knock on 1998 Dodge Neon.

sounds like a lifter my ford f150 does the same thing when its cold but then quits when it gets warm or it could be a weak oil pump. (just some thoughts)

SOURCE: I have a 2005 Dodge neon sxt and in the morning

This is probably a bent pushrod or warped head or something of that sort. SERIOUS problems. Take it to a mechanic. Knocking of any sort is a bad, BAD sign. Good luck.

SOURCE: a knocking that starts when engine is cranked then it goes away

The knock is likely a worn connecting rod bearing. Are you using the correct weight of oil, never use any heavier than 10W30W, heavy oil viscosity's cause slow circulation through the oil passages and starve the engine's bearings for oil.

I have a chirping noise that starts when I start the car. It used to die down as I would drive, now it's louder and does not go away as before.

The chirping noise is probably a worn belt
You should check all pulleys and belt tensioner for alignment and or looseness
The knocking noise could be an internal engine noise
Which is common for the little 2L engines and I'm just guessing that's what engine you have
Make sure to use a good quality oil filter to prevent oil drain back and also the proper weight of oil
Too thick of oil can also cause this until engine warms up
You should use 5w30 or 10w30
The owners manual may say and sometimes the oil cap will give the recommended weight of oil

Loud knocking coming from the bottom end and now loss of power sludge build up i have changed oil normal every 2500-3000 miles with synthetic and slick fifty.

the engine probably has a bad bearing in it.oil sludge can be caused by short trip driving, overheating, pluged crank case vent or pcv system not working.the power loss due to the computer retarding ignition timeing due to the knock sensor producing a signal from the engine knock.regardless an ongine ocerhaul or replacement is neede.
but first make sure that the bell housing bolts, torque converter bolts are all tight.
make sure the knock isnt from the catalytic converter
check for dents in the oil pan
check engine accessorys for noise such as water pump.power steering pump,alternator,a/c compressor.and all attachment bolts

2007 dodge grandcaravan knocking noise

If your engine has a rod knock the engine has to be rebuilt or replaced rebuilt is about $2000 to $3000 dollars and a new motor even more.It is unusal for a rod to be out around 60,000 miles unless it was ran real hard or run out of oil or way low on oil.

I have a 2005 dodge neon sxt, in the morning when I start it up I hear a loud knocking noise from the engine but after about 15 seconds it gets softer but is still there all day when I'm driving around.

It is probably your lifters sticking. Check your engine oil level and if thats fine, then add some oil detergent/additive that says it will "reduce engine knock and free sticky lifters" run with that additive for a couple hundred miles or until the noise gets better. then replce your oil after that without using the additive

Your engine is toast. The black smoke indicates more than likely your valve seals are leaking oil into the combustion chamber or the piston rings are shot.
