(No way to select proper year as 2001 is earliest selection.) I have a '99 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder 2.0L non turbo Automatic trans. My car starts and runs for about 5 minutes or until the engine gets to 241 degrees then shuts down. My mechanic is stating it is the ECM now is this accurate and if so how do I remove it myself?
241 F = 116.5 C so the engine is at or past boiling point
It is possible that the engine coolant temp sensor is what is shutting down the engine through the ECM
the engine starts and runs which doesn't make the ECM , the fault but it can be tested by the substitution of a known good ECM unit
There is a method of reading fault codes for the vehicle so it would be advisable to get them read professionally first
SOURCE: crankshaft position sensor location
Hello. One way to check if it is working is when you try to start the car does the needle move on you tac? If not then your crank sensor is more then likely the problem. It is located on the backside of the engine under the intake manifold. If is in about the center of the block. There will be a 10mm bolt holding the sensor in. If you decide to change it yourself (not to terrible of a job) unplug the sensor, remove the bolt and spin it back and forth slightly while pulling it out. It may be stoburn and you might have to work at it for a little bit (not a done of room) but it will come. When it's out the sensor will be shaped kind of like an L. I have changed a few of these over time and they can be a little stoburn. To install just reverse the process.

Transmission may be low on transmission fluid or the transmission fluid pump failed. If it's electrical, you can still get it in to gear, but would not shift gears. Good luck and keep me posted, check transmission fluid level and have the transmission line pressure tested. Before that check all your fuses.

if the check engine light came on it could be anything, that would not show up in your coolant, oil, etc. Have the code read. if you have recently got gas, and you didn't screw the gas cap on the right way, it will make the check engine light come on, that's how particular those lights can be. have it read and let me know what you find out.
