The heating / air conditioning control knob on my dodge durango isn't working properly. When you change the settings on the knob, (5-6 different settings) it is supposed to switch vents depending on what you choose. The heat/air works but the everything is coming out the front defrost vents and none of the other vents are working. When I choose "max AC" it is supposed to come out the vents on the front of the dash, but instead it is going to the defrost vents, causing the outside of the windows to steam. Is there a relay or something that that controls the changing of vents, and did it burn out? How hard is it to replace? I supposed it is buried in the dash and is really hard to get at..
There is a vacuum leak under the hood. Find the vacuum line on the passenger side where it comes through the firewall and follow it to the engine. You system needs vacuum to operate and without it the default setting is on defrost for safety reasons.
Under the hood on the passenger side at the firewall where the AC tubes come out should be a small black hard plastic tube. That is the vacuum feed. It will look similar to the green vacuum line you found under the dash. It usually attaches to a larger hard plastic line that eventueally routes to the right side of the intake manifold with an inline check-valve attached. The other end of the larger line is also important as far as leaks are concerned. Follow the line to the cruise servo and vacuum reservoir and make sure there are no leaks.
Look under the dash on the driver side near the transmission hump. You should see several lines coming together in a trapezoid shaped connector. Make sure both halves of the connector are attached to each other. Or with the engine running listen closely for a hissing sound from behind the dash or heater control. You may have to pull the heater control to make sure it is connected.

Dodge does not use vacuum to control the heat settings on the durango. There is a servo motor and cams that control the dampers in the pleneum for the heat, dash vents, floor and defrost.
Thanks for the info! Same problem on my 1994 Chevy Van. Stuck on Defrost. Found the deteriorating vacuum line in less than 1 minute. Trimmed it back a little an walla, fixed!! I'll get some new vacuum hoses soon and replace these shortly. Thanks again...
2005 durango: the AC front stopped working. The fan doesn't even run. The rear AC works just fine. What causes this?

Where does the vacuum line attach to the engine? I cannot find anything that looks like a vacuum hose under the hood that heads in that direction. On the passenger side under the dash I found a really small green tube that hooks to this round metal thing..Also if I take out the glove compartment so I can see inside the dash, there is what looks like a tube in a black sheath that has some metal sections attached to it as well..are these things any part of it?
I found the vacuum lines..the line splits into 2, one going to the cruise control and then one through the firewall..I pulled the line off by where it splits off and it had plenty of vacuum. Under the dash on the passenger side, I found a round metal looking thing that has 2 of the green tubes going into it, and in the middle it looks like it has a metal rod going into it from another black line. I don't know if this is part of some kind of plunger, or if this is actually is part of the vacuum line. None of the green tubes hooked to the metal thing had vacuum. I fear that whatever it is wrong is buried behind the dash..
