I do not know the exact torque, but your dealer does, it is critical. Too loose is better than too tight. If it is too tight, you will be walking home. I hope this helps.

Retorque specicifications for head

Hi Moz, Make sure to use replacement bolts or if reusing, make sure none have stretched. The torque settings for the "A" series engine is 27 NM. After tightening to that torque, paint a dot of white paint onto each bolt head facing directly forward. Further torque settings use angle settings. Continue tightening a further 90 degrees. When all bolt have been tightened a further 90 degrees, continue an additional 90 degrees, (180 degrees) until painted dots on each bolt head face backwards. No re-torquing is required. Regards John

I took my 97 Intrepid to a mechanic and was told I need sub frame bushings replaced. The will charge me about $900. Is ir possible for me to do the work myself. I do some smaller work on my autos myself....

Hi Derek,

My God...Sure is a terrible thing to be charged such a rediculous outragous price!

Yes, you can do this cheaper, by doing it yourself. But,..It isn't an easy task and you have to be very careful!

Compare prices between Auto Zone & Advanced Auto, they both price match. Also, they both rent out tools relatively cheap and the Bushing's for your vehicle costs about $57.99 each.

You will need all (4) bushings required for your vehicle, a jack and jack stands for the front part of car to rest on. Not too mention tools!

Basically it is a (4) bolt cross pattern under your motor, which requires your motor to held with a jack itself, so you have to be careful that you don't damage your engine, Once you get the bushings changed out, you will have to set and torque each one.

There isn't instructions in the Manual on how to do this...but both stores I mentioned can guide you through the process and can give you the torque settings.

I don't know how you are set up on tools or money etc,. so,.. If I was you Derek, I would get some more quotes on prices to have it fixed by a mechanic, that way, you are covered under a warranty!

The parts alone are going to put you over the $200.00 mark! I would rather have the headache searching for quotes with different mechanics, than worrying about damaging my motor, or risk having the motor fall on you and hurting you!

Best of luck to you, I'll give you tip you could try? Since school is back in session, you might see if a local High School (SHOP CLASS) will do the labor for you and you purchase the parts? You'd be surprised! They have licensed technicians over-seeing the students!

Kind Regards!

I have a mk2 Cortina with a vibration in or around the rear of the drivesaft and or diff. I removed the driveshaft yesterday to find the diff flange nut loose. The cause of the problem or a result of the...

make sure you use sunray washers on all the bolts on the diff flange,as far as torque settings are concerned, two 8"spanners,one on each end with max hand pressure is enough.the vibration is a different kettle of fish, have you checked the long tube that comes out of the gearbox for the support bush, commonly missed.
