SOURCE: I have a 96 cavalier z24. when I start it up the

See if there is a code in the computer and work from there. Find someone with an OBD2 code reader. If I'm not mistaken an OBD2 code reader works on 1996 and newer models. Could be a bad coil and you don't notice it when you first start it until it idles down, to check for that, while the engine is running, pull each wire off the spark plug, Each time you do that you should hear the engine struggle. Then pick back up once you plug it back to the spark plug. If you pull one and nothing happens to the engine, that could be all or part of the problem. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: My 2001 tahoe dies while idling in park.

If the only problem is idle and it runs grat above ide then the most likely component is the Idle Air Control valve. This is providing you have no codes stored indicating something else.

SOURCE: vortec 350 knock on start-up.

Is it a ping or a knock? It could be the initial timing is not set correctly. Are you losing coolant? It could be a leaking head gasket and is leaking a small amount of anti-freeze into one of the cylinders. If it is a bearing it will get worse and worse, is the oil pressure good? I guess I'd take it back to the rebuilder.

SOURCE: 1998 Malibu 3.1L V6, Check Engine code P0171, Both

P0171 - is fuel system is to lean (Bank#1) Take the car back to who ever scanned it for you and see if any codes are now pressent in particular to the EGR Valve they range from P0400 up to and including P0409, or any other new codes. While you are at it make sure they erase the set code P0171 un less it is already don.If no codes show up on the new scan replace the Ignition Control Module not the ( ECM -on board computor). If new codes do show up follow up on them first. Good Luck.

SOURCE: What would make my 1999 Chevy Blazer 4x4 with a 4.3L Vortec engine suddenly start backfiring?

I know there are a lot of solutions here but I would concentrate on a couple of known issues for the 99 4.3l engine. Remove the distributor cap and rotor, check the reluctor wheel under the rotor and make sure it is not loose on the distributor shaft. The other issue is a worn distributor gear, you will notice a lot of freeplay when you try rotating the distributor rotor back and forth.
Last but not least, spray the inside of the distributor cap, the rotor and the inside of the distributor, this will remove and prevent moisture build up causing the backfire issue you are experiencing...
Good luck.

1991 Cadillac DeVille (has 110,000 miles on it) suddenly dies while driving. Starts and idles fine, but shuts off after driving only 1-2 blocks. What's wrong and how do we fix it?

There are many things that can contribute to this problem. It sounds like it may be ignition related. Possibly an ignition control module or ignition coil. The check engine light coming on while driving is the key to finding the problem. The light comes on when the computer finds a problem and will then store it in its memory. Have the codes checked for what the computer has found to be at fault and with a little diagnostics, should lead you to the problem

Won t start

run the fault codes and look for faulty cam/ crank position sensor as this is indicated by the backfire/hard start and lower idle RPM. Check that battery terminals are clean and tight..

2004 freelander hse erratic idle in park, fine in drive

Do you know what engine scan data is ? Disconnecting sensors is not the way to find a problem ! What is the computer seeing as data input signals . Is the vehicle in closed loop fuel control , is the EGR opening when it shouldn't be , Is the PCM controlling the idle air control valve or is the vehicle drive by wire (electronic throttle control ?

Sounds more like a timing problem than an O2 Sensor. Distributor out of Sync would be my guess. It ran better at Higher idles because the timing belt/chain was tight from tension at low idle the timing was off which caused your problems. Now the belt is either broken or so loose the timing is out and the vehicle won't fire. If it has a Distributor cap remove it and watch the rotor. If it turns the belt is intact but Timing may still be off.

Not idling smoothly, sometimes having to restart at a stop w/ tranny in drive.

sure, that could be it. I would also suspect the fuel filter as well.
