Sounds like a broken shift cable or stretched out have someone hold shifter like their putting the car into park , not running .
while they r doing this open hood find shift linkage try pushing it into park if it does then you've found your problem , and by the way please block wheels so car doesn't roll to remain safe while doing this .

when you hear the click hold the key in that position for about 7 seconds and then go and feel if the batterie cables are hot if they are hot you have either a bad starter or a frozen engine meaning engine is lock, or if they get not hot at all make sure the cables and conectors at batterie are clean and tie and try again if wont start and cables not hot then replace starter
you can also hold the key all the way in and have someone top on starter with small hammer some time this will get it to run if it runs that way then do not shut the car off park it in desired place and replace starter
