I have a 1995 Mercury Villager. Replaced the engine and tranny.

I have a 1995 Mercury Villager. Replaced the engine and transmission with another one. I am having trouble with the car shifting into 2nd and 3rd hard at 3500 rpm. O.d kicks in at 4500 rpm. No problem down shifting. note: tranny fluid leaked out of the shaft and radiator when it was replaced, but i refilled the tranny to the proper level. O.D. light blinks on start up.

I do not see it that way at this point. I am focusing on electronic componants that might give me these symptoms.

make sure there is enough fluid if there is you might want to have it re built or changethe filter but if it has over 75000 mi that might kill it but it is worth a try as you could still have it re built if a new filter kills it

Overheating, smoking and dying.now it ont start at

What is overheating ? Engine or tranny? You said you put tranny fluid in, but not in the engine right? Engine sounds like it is toast. Is there any abnormal look to the engine oil on the dipstick? Are you losing coolant?
If you add coolant with engine NOT hot, and watch the radiator fill spout with engine started and warming up, do you see water gurgling?
Do a compression test.

1995 Villager Engine light is on

you may have a broken crankshaft snout. This was a common problem on 93-95 Villagers if customer replaced a/c belt and overtightened the belt tensioner.

Did you ecently have the belt changed?
Also, remove distributor cap and rotor ( 1 screw) and slotted plate/ Look for brown dust on optical sensors. If yes clean them and see if van starts. If it starts you will need a new distributor (ebay $200) as the bearing is going.
