Another possibility is the starter itself is bad, requiring a higher amperage to turn over. A starter 'draw test' will give you the answer to a bad starter.

true, but the starter would have to be shorted, this car uses about 100amps. the test is easy. and why would the jump start and not his, the jumped car has 500CCA just like his, so maybe his is not 500CC anymore. or simply not charged, may be its a battery drain issue, The tests are all easy, ( for) bad battery, bad charging system., phantom drains, and bad starter. where do you want to start. if lazy like me, put in a known good charged battery, start now> ? ok, yes it does, so your battery was bad or ONLY discharged. Test the battery next, H3LL first.?

what amazes me is folks with no garage charger, if you own buy one car, get a charger or have to take cab every time you leave the head lights on.. Hell, when i was young , had that and would make it to work and park on a hill, then gavity start my car and drive home every day. until i could fix it right. that was back in 1965. and can still do that today. my cars are all M/T i can push start them all.

edit buy = but. ( use volt meter, if the reseted battery is not 12.6v (not in siberia) then it is not charged. so charge, it, if it dont make 12.6v its a end of life battery. then start the car the voltage must be 13.3 to 15v, if not the charge system is dead, and last if the voltage falls over night, its PHANTOM drain. if you have a good battery and starter is slow, check current (a $50 tool) your call.

I agree if you want a quick try at something in this situation, throw in a battery; however testing the starting/charging system would be the best start to isolate the problem. And yes, I too recall the days of an MT trans and hill starting it......LOL. A quickie test is 1.start engine, 2. remove negative cable, if engine stays running-charging system ok - replace battery. Done deal.

Remember the old powerglide trannys that had rear pumps, you could push start an automatic - wish they still had that incorporated in - it would save alot of people a tow bill sometimes.

I wasnt trying to get off track here.......But the answer between both of us should be an answer for Denis.

yes the rear pump days, had one on 64 Pontiac, the battery is bad or us discharged, test the charge system first, with a loaned good battery, 13.3 to 15vdc is a good charge system, does the battery discharge over night that is called phantom drain, and ammeter and 5 min, work, omg , its got Drain, all this is easy, with a $10 dmm meter. super easy. but why not charge your battery and see if works ok ,first, saving $125 for a new battery, make $en$se?

    _-__-___-_ Feb 04, 2015

bad battery? bad charge system or you have drain, pick one, or ask how to do each test,

or go to walmart and the kid there has the brain box that tell him what is wrong, (zero training, zero knowledge of laws of electrics) just a expensive test box. that too, works.

  1. battery is bad. (wont hold a charge ) wont stay at 12.6vdc rested
  2. the alternator charage system is not staying at 13.3 to 15v running. any walfart volt meter answers that. fast. a $10 tool.
  3. or parked, the battery drains overnight this is called Phantom Drain, we use an ammeter (same tool above)and find that. (a.k.a , dark current)

3 simple tests, and answer is now known.
ask how.
you you have 2 choices, test, or guess.
one is cheap and other is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

93 sidekick won't start

I would go with the short in the battery idea if the cables were connected correctly. You'll have to switch out the battery with another to find out.

Why won't my 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara start?

ill answer for NO ELECTRICAL POWER :
sure and is easy with any DMM meter, got one? any $20 DMM.
my guess;1
engine will not crank
dash lamps out.
head lights out. dead.
post systems of electrical system , all parts that work and those that dont work, and problem is easy.
cleaned battery terminals.
tried borrowed battery that reads, 12.6vdc ? (charged is 12.6)
2012 that is in warranty car.... ?
my guess on 2012
jumping a car, that is battery jump starting.
a battery can short, and no jump start on earth will start shorted battery in car. but does lay down some big sparks, or burns up cheap walmart cables.
if the car will not crank, say just that, my starter motor will not crank
jump started from live running other car.
if true then make sure headlights work , if they dont work fix that first.
HL must always work, even keys in pocket.
best is to put a fully charged battery in the car, jump starting can cause
surges that can damage sensitive electronic$$$, do jumps as a desperate measure,
with a charged battery,
1: Head lights work, no fix that , use voltmeter
2: cranks robustly.
no , wiggle shifter lever, (on A/T cars the park switch blocks cranking) On M/T the clutch blocks cranking.
with any dMM
measure battery voltage before crank and during.
12.6v good. reseted.
cranking.
0 to 10v bad (weak battery or shorted starter motor)
11 and above good. and must crank, if not , starter is bad.
to prove starter is bad, check voltage at starter solenoid coil wire lug.
it must be at 11v cranking , below 8v it chatters, and fails.
if at 0v cranking this lug that means the Key start line is failing.
A/T switch not closes, or bad ignition switch.

Car won't start without a jump but battery okay

wont crank or wont start.??
no car starts , if it cant crank. (unless push starter (M/T magic)
that is not a trans sensor its the PRN switch.
ill answer for, wont CRANK !
it wont crank even with a good battery (charged) or jump started.
1: bad start
2: bad wires to same.
so hot wire the starter small wire, the key start line is tiny.
cranks. , starter good, no crank starter bad or cables bad.
if it cranks hot wired, then the key line is dead.
easy, huh?

I jumped car off it crunk on its own fora day, then batt went dead again, this time it won't jump off. It wants to crank but won't turn over.

not sure what you said but.
seems the battery is discharging,? 12.6v is fully charged,
own a voltmeter?
try a good loaned battery , does it start the car,?
i think you meant?
i can jumper cable start my car at any time. (off another running car)
but after running my car, the battery discharges and it will not crank at all. right?
this means ,the charging system on your car is bad.
if the starter cranks great, then the engine is flooded or is in great need of a tune up (sparkplugs etc)
if flooded try the super secret in the op guide, crank with throttle wide open , this magic trick cuts all fuel injection allowing the flooding
to purge away, and eventual starting.
my guess 2 is the car wont start, so you crank the battery flat
you jumper start it and it runs. (luck)
then day 2, same deal cranks ok but wont start.. ever tune up the engine?

Battery won't hold charge.

Inside the battery itself, a chemical reaction produces the electrons. Eventually the energy needed is no longer available...

Won't start without jumping

Start the car with engine running remove the + battery cable. If engine continues to run alternator is good and battery is probably bad. If engine dies then alternator needs replaced.
