Typically the car stalls when slowing for a stop.Sometimes it will re-start immediately sometimes it takes 10-30 minutes. Usually no fault code displays but once only 0120. I have replaced the fuel pump relay, the Temperature control sensor and the MAF sensor. The run to work is 80 miles of back road, freeway and urban usually in the early part of the day it is only after the car has been sitting in the hot sun and is then subject to stop-go traffic that the problem manifests itself. At speeds of more than 20mph up to the legal maximum and beyond there is no problem even on a hot day. The coolant has been flushed and replaced with the Audi recommended brand, the temp gauge never rises above 1/2 way. Stalling only occurs when slowing down never whilst accelerating. The underbody sheild is missing and I wonder if this may affect airflow over components? Milage is about 140,000 although previous owners appear to have kept up with servicing. Any ideas as to what to look at next?

here is something to try
keep some cold water with you and the next time it happens very quickly get out and pour the water on the crankshaft sensor then restart. If it starts right away without the usual two minutes than you will need to change this sensor. The sensor is easy to find you will see a wiring harness around the crankshaft pulley(the large one at the bottom the basically runs all your accessories like the p/s pump, alternator, water pump). Try to famaliarize yourself as to the location of the sensor first so that you can try to restart it within about 30 seconds.

It sounds like it is low on coolant. Coolant expands when it warms up so if it is just low enough to trip the switch when it is cold it will shut the light off when it warms up. You should be ok to just top it off but be sure that what you put in is compatible with what is in it. There must also be a leak somewhere in the system for you to have lost some to begin with. Depending on how many miles you have on the car it wouldn't hurt to have the cooling system flushed if it's never been done before. If you do get it flushed take it to the dealer to have it done. Explain to them the low coolant and have them check the system for leaks at the same time. Hope this helps

It sounds more like you've got an intermittant vacuum leak. Try, with the engine running, spraying some WD-40 or any kind of penetrating lubricant spray, over the intake manifold area and any related vacuum lines. If you hear the engine strat to stumble, providing you're not shooting directly into the air box, concentrate the spray on that area until you're able to pinpoint a loose, cracked. or off, vacuum line or hose.
