Part time or awd ?
do no engage part time 4wd on dry pavement.!! only on ice or dirt.
do post what your tires are touching? dirt or pavement????????

if stuck in 4L , on dry pavement , pull over to side of road, dirt
then shift out. if no dirt anywhere? sand or gravel or grass.?
then jack up one wheel then deselect 4Low. back do 2WD
options for your car, (do post what you have)
qoute sales brochure:
Those going 4WD can enjoy the standard Command-Trac II, or opt for the Selec-Trac II, featuring full-time AWD, 4WD Lo and a rearward-biased torque split. (end quote)

how you drive both cars, varies greatly.
in your glove box is an operators guide , did you read that yet
under how to drive in 4wd or awd.??????????

Testimonial: "Fossil: My Tires are touching snow! I have not engaged my 4wd on dry pavement. The main problem is that my indicator lights will not turn off and my 4 wheel drive would not engage in my snowy driveway. However, I made it out of my driveway slipping and sliding and on the icy roads this morning in 2wd."

cool, looks like PT-4wd or AWD has failed. if AWD this is more complex., you need to know which option you have?. but no matter, it is failed. check fuses first. then scan it with an OBD2 scan tool to see if you have errors called DTCs. these can if fact ,pin point problems here.

SOURCE: 89 jeep cherokee 4 wheel drive won't engage gears

If you engage the 4WD with a switch instead of manually, there is a motor in or on the transfer case. Because of the location, these can go bad. u need to check all your switches and actuators there are actuators under vehicle that clog up with dirt.also try putting vehicle in neutral before engaging 4x4.
This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya.

Sounds like the splines on your transfer case gear are ground down

SOURCE: 4 wheel drive doesnt work.

Has this Jeep been modified at all?
It sounds like the shifter cable was reinstalled backwards.
Specifically the 4-Low "Not Climbing Well". 4-Low should give you the best torque and hill climbing ability.
Do you feel any "Binding" in the steering wheel (difficult to turn)?
Remember a Jeep uses real driveshafts and differentials to give you 4WD - you cannot engage 4WD or 4-Low on dry hard surfaces. It needs a little bit of slip between the wheels for turns.
Check you're fluids too.

SOURCE: 2004 jeep liberty stuck in 4 wheel drive low -

a reluctant transfer case can sometimes be coaxed by shifting into reverse, backing up 10 feet, and then back to forward.

How to deactivate 4 wheel drive on jeep cherokee crd 2012 model

this is USA forum.
we dont have that car here.
nor your book on it.
is this part time 4wd, and on dry pavement/
if yes, move car to dirt, 1 tire must be on ice, dirt ,grass ?
and now you can exit 4wd, due to dive line wind up.
we dont have 2012 Cherokees here, just liberty. kinda the same.
the book on my rice jeep , says jack up one tire.(funny to read)
day 1, our cars were opted with (part time)
The Command-Trac transfer case has four positions: 2-HI, 4-HI, Neutral, and 4-LO.
or
Day 1, opted
The Selec-Trac transfer case has five positions: 2-HI, 4-HI Part-Time, 4-HI Full-Time, Neutral, and 4-LO.

they are not the same system at all.

only you know what you shifter reads, no photos by you to help
did you read your operators manual first.
it tells you how to use the box.

four wheel drive mode tells me zero.
use the correct names, seen above, are you in 4-HI
on dry pavement.
or 4-L (either)

Can I engage and disengage the 4 wheel drive while I'm driving? At what speed?

You can engage from two wheel drive to four wheel drive at any reasonable speed though I find it's easier on the transfer case if you do that below 45mph. Lift you foot off the gas as you shift so the unit is not under stress. To engage 4 low, you should not be traveling faster than 5mph and then, only on slippery surfaces. When in that gear, it is not advisable to travel much faster than 25-30mph and never on dry ground.

I cant get the leaver to engage from 2 whhel drive

hi,

try leaving the main gearshift in neutral and shut the car off , then try and move the lever to four wheel drive. or maybe try to switch it while slowly backing up. most likely since its hardly ever used it just might be stuck from non use. if neither of those ideas fix it. call the dodge dealership and ask to talk to a mechanic in the service department, they might be able to help, call them first before you take it in$$$..

2004 jeep liberty front suspension seems to lock up front tires while making a turn WTF????????

Sounds like the tires are hitting the wheel wells. THis is Deadly.

Do you have oversize tires on the Jeep? Is your front axle drive engaged? Is it slung low to the ground like a low-rider? Any of these can cause 'lockup' in the front end when turning. If not, I would have the U-joints, CV joints and drive linkages checked.
