1979 coup deville. It will shift reverse, drive, park, but wont shift 1st-4th gears in drive only. What is the problem is it won't shift through the drive gears, its stuck in 1st or second gear

The most likely problem is the locking mecanism in your shif selector.
There is a selenoid that prevent the car from get it out of park unless you push the brake pedal while the car is running or the ignition switch is on.
The problem could be in the brake switch itself under the dash or the selenoid in the shifter console.

I have the same problem on my 2005 cts. The shifter fork has two rubber bushings that attach at the transmission that break or give way. I assume they did this for a softer feel and to avoid vibration but it leads to the selector not engaging well when you go the extreme direction of reverse on the shifter as there is too much deflection. I replaced the bushings with washers as spacers and it seems to work as a "McGyver" fix. I do intend to get the parts needed from Cadillac to restore it to factory standards. Hopefully they have the parts. To fix the problem you have to go under the car. To get good access you have to disconnect the exhaust and the driveshaft. I did it without this and just tormented my poor hands but I wasn't willing to do all the other work while in my driveway. You simply take the clip holding the fork shaft onto the transmission selector end off and slide the small shaft out. I also took off the shifter side of the fork to study the thing a bit better. That takes a 13mm and a small allen wrench, 4.5 or 3/16, can't remember. Then replace the bushings or do as I did and stack some washers so as to get rid of the slack between the inside of the fork and the gear selector on the transmission. Assemble and try. If you have as good dexterity and tenacity at your fingertips as I do, you'll curse the day you attempted doing this without taking out all the other stuff. If you don't, take out all the other stuff to make room for your hands. The space is very confined. Good luck.

change shift solinoids. located in transmission pan. 4.6l north star has a 4t80e tranny. remove bolts holding pan drop pan . now disconnect the shift solinoids thair are 2 u should see several bolts around 20 bolts holdong the valve body to the transmission unscrew thees bolts . ( 10MM) before removing all bolts disconnect the hook with a clip going to the valve body.its located to a spring and lever. now remove rest of bolts. DO NOT LET IT FALL DOWN. remove the connector going to manifold pressure sensor. use a flat head screw driver to pull clips holding the solinoids in place. thair should be a small **** located on the other side of throdle body. DO NOT REMOVE ALL THE BOLTS OUT OF THE BODY. THAIR ARE BALL BERINGS INSIDE THAT WILL FALL OUT OF PLACE. the screen is located in between the shift solinoids. DO NOT DO THIS JOB WITHOUT ALREADY HAVING THE REPLACMENT PARTS ON HAND. when putting every thang back together i would check the wiring harness for anny shorts . The first thing to check is the linkage. Sometimes the linkage will slip, Block the wheels on the car (both front and rear) to prevent rolling. Locate the shift linkage on your transmission, and loosen the nut. You should be able to move the shift lever through all the gears, including "P" and "R". Place the transmission shift lever in "Park" (on the transmission) then move the shift lever (inside the car) in the "P" position and tighten the nut (not a bad idea to use a new locking nut here) You should now be able to shift through all gears. If this does not work, you have a more serious problem that may include a worn or broken belt or broken parking pawl inside the transmission.
