Question about 1993 Ford Explorer Limited

1 Answer

Starter/solenoid prob? 1993 Explorer XLT starter/solenoid problem? I have a 1993 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L with automatic transmission. The odomoter reads approx. 104k miles, although the vehicle title states it is void due to the vehicle having been wrecked and a different motor was installed. There is a heavy-duty toggle switch for the starter with 10 gauge wiring. Just recently, the car became very difficult to start and keep running. I cleaned and replaced battery terminals and the battery is less than 1 yr. old. When it starts, it runs fine for about 30-60 seconds then begins sputtering and dies, then is impossible to start for a period of time. I noticed the smell of burning wire coming from the starter/solenoid, and the solenoid was extremely hot when i got underneath the car to check it out. Sometimes after an hour or two it will almost start again, but usually fails. Had the battery recharged and checked plus the alternator checked and both were ok, according to Auto Zone. Was planning a 600-mile trip to visit children this Saturday...any helpful tips or advice would be greatly appreciated, I'm desperate!!

Replace the MAF sensor. The starter is overheating due to cranking excessively. It has noyhing to do with the engine staying running. The MAF sensor is located as the first sensor out of air cleaner. It controls the fuel. Good luck and have a safe trip.

What would cause transmission to shudder first thing in the morning when you start the engine and put it in reverse on a 2004 ford explorer v8 4.6

If car has high miles, trans wear could cause this. I would try removing 1 quart of new fluid and replace with Lucas trans additive.

Should I add XL11 trans fluid additive/friction modifier to my fluid when I replace my solenoid pack with the latest design?

Have a good Auto transmission repairer give the box a service and this should fix your problem.
Do not put additives into oil as if they were required Shell Mobil Caltex BP Castrol and all other manufacturere would have put the additive in when ther were refining the oil

Will not change gear until you have done about 2 miles. 1993 ford explorer 4ltr v6 left hand drive ( eddie bouer )

How many miles? Get the transmission serviced. Get the filter changed and get new fluid put in. Ford transmissions arent that great, but try getting the transmission serviced. I got a ford taurus that was said to have a bad trans. I changed the filter and put a new filter in. Voila, a 500 dollar car turned into a 3000 dollar car. : )

93 Ford Explorer Starter won't disengage from Fly Wheel

My ford f150 did the same thing, so I put the old starter solenoid back in( the one by the battery) and it cured the problem.
Come to find out, the after market relays aren't rated right, to get a good one, and the right one, you have to spend more and get it at a dealer.

Hot starter doesn't work

you need to check and see if your getting power at the starter solenoid on the small wire when it is acting up. this wire should be hot when key is in start position. if you are then you have a solenoid problem. if not then it is a wiring or ign switch problem
