Rebuilt engine with timing problems

I just rebuilt my engine and I seem to be having difficulty figuring out the proper timing on the crankshaft pulleys because the paint has worn off. I looked at a new crankshaft pulley and the yellow mark was on the far left end, so I timed the engine at 15 BTDC (3 notches to the right) from the far left notch. That didn't seem to run quite right and the engine really seems to like running with it timed about 6 notches (30 degrees) from the far left notch. I guess my question is which notch is actually TDC? Is it the far left, or more towards the middle?

You have it right, the yellow mark is TDC and it's the notch furthest to the left...it e to be set at 15 degrees before TDC, but you have to disconnect the I.A.C sensor to do it.if it's still that far out, you're probably of by a tooth.bring #1 piston to TDC, pull out distributor, turn rotor to #1 on dist cap and put in dist..adjust accordingly. .

according to a manual , the crank key will point to arrow , the intake cam should have an letter i aligned with arrow on belt cover and exhaust cam should have letter e aligned with arrow on belt cover , and as always rotate the engine 2 full turns to inspect timing marks before cranking or trying to start the engine . if you haven't taken the original belt off yet , paint your marks for quicker reference .

You don't mention replacing any tensioner bearing which if worn could be causing the belt to drift.
I would probably remove any covers and physically watch the belt to try to determine which of the surfaces on which the belt runs is at fault. I think the belt is probably not that cheap so I hope you cure this soon.

You will have to brace the crankshaft somehow, either by way of the flywheel, or the pulley. The trick to getting the bolt to break is "heat". Propane will sometimes work, but it's generally not hot enough. You want to get that bolt glowing if you can, and hit it with air impact then. Be careful not to burn yourself!

This is the same as a Ford Escort 1.9, the #1 cylinder should be all the way up. To confirm- the crak shift mark should be on zero which is Crank Shift Center- THe camshift sproket should align with the headmark. Make sure both marks don't move. Align the belt- not too tight , not to loose

Sounds like your gas guage isn't accurate. A fuel pump is not designed to draw fuel from the tank until it is completly dry. This is to avoid sucking up all the debris on the bottom of the tank.

Did you maintain the clearance between the crank bearings and the crankshaft? Same goes for the rod bearings. Is the oil pressure too high? Sounds like there are tight bearings.

I have a 96 camry. It blew a timing belt. In the result of that. It bent valves. So i had engine rebuilt. Now it wont start. It back fires. So i thought the timing was wrong. Pulled distributor and rotated...

I am puzzled over how this bent your engine valves, as these engines are "non-interference", that is, the pistons should not contact the valve heads in the event of a snapped timing belt.

Well, you have a rebuilt engine, so..... an engine which backfires and will not start is almost certain to be mistimed, that is, the crankshaft, camshafts, and distributor are not in the right relationship.

You will need to check the crank sprocket and camshaft sprockets, in relation to the marks on them, as here, p 26

The part that turns your belt is the crankshaft and crankshaft pulley. If you are right about the crankshaft being broken, then your engine will need rebuilt. But in most cases it is cheaper to buy a rebuilt engine from one of the professional rebuilders. Check with you local auto parts stores and they will be able to advise you on the best rebuilder to use.

Engine ticking. and gets louder at high rpms. it is constantly rattling

First, you are using Regular Unleaded Gasoline, right? If so, you either have a Rod knocking (bad rod bearings), worn valves/seals/springs, faulty engine mount, etc. I would first inspect the Engine mounts. If the ticking is coming from inside the Engine, you will need to get the Cylinder Head rebuilt, or the block rebuilt (crankshaft, rods, bearings, pistons, etc.) If the Engine mounts are fine, you will probably need to get the engine rebuilt.

I have a 1997 ls 400 coach edition with 354k i'm starting to have major problems should i replace the engine or get it repaired

Probably time for a salvage engine swap after about 250,000 miles.
Having it rebuilt is an option because as long as you have not damaged the crankshaft, it should not cost more then $2000 to have it rebuilt to as good as new, by a reasonable shop.
But avoid dealers if possible.
Japanese engines with low miles are very inexpensive however, because of the high tax on cars over 5 years old in Japan.

Rebuilt engine. when started again car ticks. timing marks aligned correctly, timing light shows 20 deg. what gives?

Most likely the hydraulic valve lifters, notoriously noisy in Mitsubishi engines. My 2007 Galant Ralliart Mivec 3.8 V6 with less than 15000 miles ticks also as did my 1989 Gallant and 1997 Eclipse.

Camshaft and crankshaft problem

The camshaft and crankshaft are located internally in the engine. To replace the engine would have to come out and completly rebuilt. Unless you have alot of experience in rebuilding engines I don't reccomend attempting this on your own. These are major compotents and have to be installed and aligned properly.
